We are seeking an enthusiastic and talented Technician to join the Roads team based in our Guildford office. You’ll work alongside a host of talented people ranging from early career professionals to established engineers and project managers across the Roads business and other disciplines to improve local and strategic road networks and develop a broad range of infrastructure projects.
Responsibilities
- Deliver highway design solutions such as access and haul roads for the National Grid Upgrade portfolio and other highway improvements for National Highways and local authorities.
- Develop experience in utilities, carbon, digital and drainage through work on large multidisciplinary projects.
- Work in a multidisciplinary team to deliver innovative solutions.
- Deliver engineering solutions for projects or work packages of varying scale, complexity, value, and stage, potentially across several projects simultaneously.
- Liaise with clients, stakeholders and internal disciplines, developing trusted relationships and proactively managing expectations.
- Work closely with Project and Technical Delivery teams to measure carbon on projects using the WSP Future Ready programme.
- Be part of the team to deliver in compliance with Health & Safety and Environmental legislation and in‑house quality assurance.
- Use design and drafting tools such as Civil 3D/AutoCAD; additional skills in Bentley design software (OpenRoads Designer, MicroStation) are advantageous.
- Familiarity with BIM environments such as ProjectWise, Autodesk Forma (formerly ACC), other Common Data Environments, CAD QA/QC processes, and collaborative digital delivery.
- Demonstrate an interest or capability in digital automation, data‑driven design, or computational tools, including AI‑assisted workflows, Python, C++, Dynamo or similar.
Qualifications
- A passion for design and developing innovative solutions, demonstrating initiative and ingenuity.
- Good knowledge of relevant design standards and codes of best practice such as the Design Manual for Roads & Bridges, Manual for Streets, TSRGD, and local authority guidance.
- Level 4 qualification (or above) in a STEM‑based subject, or equivalent experience in an engineering technician role.
- Attained or working toward professional qualifications such as EngTech, with demonstrable progress.
- Understanding of highway engineering principles, including design techniques, standards, and procedures, applied to small‑scale or moderately complex projects.
- Experience handling data with MS Excel or other data‑based systems.
- Experience engaging with clients, developers, consultants, elected representatives and the public.
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to undertake site visits to inform designs.
