Role Overview
As a Fluvial Geomorphologist, you will deliver fluvial geomorphology studies, support biodiversity and water quality initiatives, and contribute technical expertise to both internal and external clients. Your work will span from detailed river assessments to the design of nature‑based solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct fluvial geomorphology studies across a diverse project portfolio.
- Lead River Condition Assessments for Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), including data analysis, reporting and recommending enhancements for net gain.
- Perform Water Framework Directive compliance assessments.
- Support the Hydromorphology Service Line Lead and the wider team in delivering technical services.
- Produce high‑quality client and public‑facing deliverables, demonstrating excellence in communication and visualisation of complex data.
- Collaborate with other disciplines to deliver engaging, multidisciplinary projects.
- Promote a ‘safety‑first’ attitude in line with WSP’s health and safety policy.
Team & Projects
The Hydromorphology team operates across Scotland, Leeds, London and Bristol. Current focus areas include BNG for rivers, erosion monitoring, sediment studies, flood alleviation schemes, natural flood management, channel design, and new hydromorphology assessment methods.
Qualifications
- BSc in a relevant field (geomorphology, environmental science, catchment management, etc.); an MSc or PhD is desirable.
- Chartered membership of a relevant professional institution or demonstrable pursuit of chartership.
- Proven track record in applied fluvial geomorphology, with knowledge of river types, sediment dynamics and hydraulics.
- Strong understanding of fluvial geomorphological processes and the Water Framework Directive.
- Experience with the planning system, ES water chapters and WFD assessments.
- Ability to manage projects and budgets.
