We are seeking a Senior/ Principal Engineer to join WSP’s Intelligent Infrastructure team as a Tunnel Systems specialist in the UK & Ireland. The role focuses on designing and advising clients on next‑generation tunnel systems technology to build safe, reliable transport networks. WSP’s Tunnel Systems capability provides end-to-end tunnel asset design and advisory services, applying a safety-by-design philosophy and operational focus.
Using your technical knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, road tunnel operations, safety and design experience, you will help deliver prestigious new-build and refurbishment tunnel systems projects across road, rail and utilities in the UK and beyond for clients including Local Authorities, National Highways and National Grid. You will collaborate with other designers and multi-disciplinary teams to deliver high-quality outputs that meet client expectations.
Responsibilities:
- Design and advise on next-generation tunnel systems technology for transport projects.
- Provide end-to-end tunnel asset design and advisory services with a safety-by-design approach.
- Deliver prestigious new-build and refurbishment tunnel systems projects across road, rail and utilities in the UK and beyond, for clients including Local Authorities, National Highways and National Grid.
- Collaborate with other designers and WSP multi-disciplinary teams to deliver high-quality outputs that meet client expectations.
What we will be looking for you to demonstrate:
- A proven technical capability in the design, operation or delivery of tunnel systems including electrical, mechanical, fire life safety, communications and control systems.
- Experience of working with applicable UK standards.
- An understanding of tunnel operational procedures and practices.
- Professional registration with an accredited institute is preferred; if you are currently on a route to professional registration, you will be supported with mentoring and Professional Registration Advisors to progress to Chartered Engineer.
- A proven track record of working collaboratively with internal and external partners on integrated highway technology projects.
- Practical understanding of infrastructure design systems, including BIM, AutoCAD (or similar), ProjectWise and SharePoint.
- Ability to motivate, develop and lead junior team members.
- Strong problem-solving skills and self-motivation when undertaking tasks.
