Overview
Transport Planning Consultant / Assistant Consultant – Business Case Advisory at WSP in the UK & Ireland. The role operates within the Mobility Planning division and may involve working in an office with the Business Case Advisory team presence (Cambridge, Exeter or London) or remotely. The team undertakes a wide range of consultancy work and collaborates with colleagues across the UK and India.
Responsibilities
- Make the case for investment in proposed transport and/or land-use schemes by understanding the rationale to do so
- Develop objectives in the context of relevant policy and identified problems and opportunities
- Develop the evidence to support informed choices by clients and funders
- Develop and apply Multi-Criteria Assessment Frameworks to ensure robust optioneering
- Create economic and financial appraisal frameworks consistent with HM Treasury and DfT guidance
- Provide analytical and appraisal expertise to colleagues across WSP
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and clients to assemble information and clearly communicate analytical findings
- Support the preparation of bids, fee proposals and project programmes
- Undertake management of projects as PM/Deputy PM
- Contribute to team meetings through knowledge sharing and general engagement
- Act as a buddy and mentor; pursue professional qualifications
- Collaborate on the delivery of transport solutions and share knowledge within the team

Role and Team
Role: Consultant or Assistant Consultant in the Business Case Advisory team. The team is part of the Mobility Planning division and, while virtual, may require time in designated offices where the team is present. The work involves delivering business case and related advisory work with clients in the public and private sectors to enable invested outcomes with robust analysis.
Qualifications and Attributes
- Interest in developing transport solutions to environmental, economic and social challenges
- Experience in undertaking transport analysis in a structured manner and identifying implications
- Strong collaboration and communication skills to work effectively in teams and present information clearly
- Willingness to understand and apply funding bodies’ business case guidance (e.g., Green Book, DfT, Transport Scotland) and related appraisal requirements
- Ability to take on responsibility and seek guidance when required
- Ability to work flexibly on multiple projects and meet deadlines
- Awareness of the commercial environment and the need to deliver within quality, time and budget
