Overview

Senior/ Principal Transport Planner role at WSP in the UK & Ireland — Cambridge office. We are seeking to recruit a Senior or Principal Transport Planner (dependent upon experience) to join our Transport Planning team in our Cambridge office. The typical day-to-day responsibilities include the following:

Responsibilities

  • Managing a range of small to medium sized transport planning projects, with responsibility for project team management and collaboration, budgeting, programming and technical excellence.
  • Making an active contribution to our four pillars (People; Clients & Growth; Operations; and Technical Excellence) and supporting our Leads in these roles.
  • Identifying and developing further opportunities with existing clients.
  • Supporting Project Managers and Directors in the preparation of bids, fee proposals and project programmes.
  • Attending and presenting at internal and external technical knowledge sharing events.
  • Supervising our early career professionals in undertaking technical tasks and coaching them in acquiring new skills.
  • Working in a large multi-disciplinary office with access to a range of people at a similar career stage across a variety of fields.
  • Working as part of a team, supporting the growth of our Mobility team in Cambridge and more broadly across our network of offices.
  • Being present in the office (hybrid working) to collaborate with colleagues and help develop, coach and support junior team members.

About the Team

Our Cambridge Mobility Team consists of transport planning and modelling professionals who work on a diverse portfolio of multidisciplinary and cross-sector projects for both public and private sector clients. These projects include business case development, public and active travel solutions, transport strategies, master planning, access support, and development planning. While our primary focus is on the East of England, we also provide support for projects across the UK and internationally, collaborating closely with our planning, infrastructure design, structures, and environmental teams.

With a strong local and regional pipeline of work, the successful applicant will play a key role in delivering an exciting and challenging range of projects for regional clients, including Local Authorities, Mayoral Combined Authorities, Local Delivery Bodies and Sub-National Transport Bodies.

You will be supported by senior members of the Mobility Team as well as our virtual UK-wide specialist teams, which include industry-leading experts. We embrace a flexible working approach that aligns with individual lifestyles and commitments, prioritising employee well-being.

Our multidisciplinary Cambridge office accommodates approximately 100 desks and is conveniently located for both the city centre and Cambridge Railway Station.

Qualifications

  • Experience in some or all the following areas of transport planning: scheme development (active travel, public transport and highways-based solutions), business case development, transport strategies and appraisal and development planning.
  • Experience leading the development of Transport Assessments and Travel Plans to a high standard for a variety of development types.
  • The ability to work effectively at both strategic and detailed levels, with up-to-date knowledge of transport policies and legislation, national and local authority design standards (DMRB, Manual for Streets, Active Travel Act Guidance) and planning processes applicable to the UK.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills, excellent working knowledge of MS Office tools, Excel spreadsheets, transport data analysis and presentation, GIS software packages (ArcGIS, QGIS, TRACC, PODARIS) and transportation software including TRICS and junction modelling programmes (Junctions 10 and LinSig).
  • Familiarity with strategic and microsimulation models would be advantageous.
  • Ability to produce technical project reports and accessible non-technical public reports and presentations for a range of clients and stakeholders to a high technical standard.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, able to communicate confidently with clients, stakeholders, team members and present at meetings, workshops and public forums.
  • Project management experience, with the ability to review client briefs and tenders, develop and contribute to fee proposals and lead project delivery including supervising workloads, task delegation, supporting junior staff and managing client expectations.
  • Have a sound commercial awareness including effective financial management.
