Your Role

Due to strong growth in our Sustainable Water Management (SWM) business, we seek experienced professionals to join our team of over 300 water science and engineering experts. Your focus will be on delivering water environment and EIA projects for clients in the Highways and Energy sectors.

The SWM team operates nationally, sharing work fairly and transparently, considering personal interests and development goals. As a senior team member, you\’ll be involved in growth, development, and resourcing of the team.

We seek a professional experienced with Highway Authorities and/or the energy sector, with a solid understanding of legislation such as the DMRB, Water Framework Directive Regulations, Environmental Permitting Regulations, the Flood and Water Management Act 2010, and the National Planning Policy Framework related to water environment. Strengths in water quality, EIA, and sustainable drainage are preferred, along with familiarity with other water disciplines for complex projects.

This role is at Associate Director level, with flexible location options within the UK and a hybrid work arrangement.

Your main focus will be delivering and leading technical roles on water environment and quality projects, advising Highway Authorities, and supporting policy and strategy development. Other tasks include leading water environment input for EIAs, managing technical, managerial, and commercial responsibilities, and mentoring team members.

Responsibilities

  • Lead project delivery, managing client and stakeholder interfaces, and supervising team inputs.
  • Manage projects effectively, balancing schedule, budget, quality, and safety standards.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to junior staff.
  • Offer expert support on water environment issues, especially water quality.
  • Engage with clients to develop trusted advisor relationships.
  • Lead business development and proposal development.
  • Contribute to growth strategies in Sustainable Water Management.
  • Develop solutions addressing client challenges collaboratively.
  • Promote health and safety best practices within the team.
  • Enhance WSP’s technical capabilities and innovate new client services.

Skills & Experience

  • Experience as a water environment technical advisor, particularly with Highway Authorities.
  • Proven leadership in technical project inputs and team management.
  • Deep knowledge of relevant legislation and policies.
  • Experience as an expert witness in planning inquiries.
  • Strong understanding of water environment EIA, water quality, and sustainable drainage systems.
  • Experience in developing guidance, policy, and strategy documents.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Practical project management experience, including managing challenging projects.

Qualifications

  • A degree in environmental, geographical, science, or engineering discipline.
  • Chartered status with C.WEM, CEnv, CSci, or CEng.
