A Little More About Your Role…
Ground & Water is part of WSP\’s Earth and Environment business. You will join a small soils team to help expand capabilities and embed soil understanding across the business. You will work on infrastructure and development projects across sectors such as energy transition, nuclear, rail, highways, and residential/commercial development. You will deliver a broad range of projects at various stages with responsibilities including bidding, project team management, project delivery, and financial management, under appropriate supervision.
The role is office and site based with a roughly 50/50 split between site and office on average. Location is flexible; travel to WSP offices for team and client meetings/project work will be required. You should be a strong relationship builder, highly organized, adaptable, and aware of the commercial demands of consultancy work. You will have the opportunity to help grow the soil team and embed soils expertise across the business.
You will undertake fieldwork/site visits and support the production of written reports for Agricultural Land Classification (ALC), Soil Resource Assessments, and tailored assessments for Environmental Statements. You will work with our Nature Advisory and Landscape teams supporting Landscape and Ecological Management Plans, manage data for technical reporting, and liaise with clients, landowners, contractors, statutory authorities and third parties.
The post will be within our Ground & Water team, a service line in WSP\’s Earth & Environment business.
A Typical Week Would Include
- Preparing for and undertaking soil surveys or supporting in the delivery of reports for DCOs, EIAs and other assessments with the wider environmental teams.
- Supporting colleagues across the UK with project delivery, assisting in data management, survey coordination and risk assessment for site works.
- Learning and being supported by a team of experienced technical staff and sharing knowledge with others.
What We Will Be Looking For You To Demonstrate…
- Degree level qualification in Soil Science, or similar (physical geology, environmental science) with 3–5 years relevant practical experience
- Experience in completing Agricultural Land Classification (ALC) surveys, Soil Resource Surveys and site supervision during construction works (ideally to BSSS competency standards)
- A thorough grounding in H&S procedures for site work
- A team player, able to work with a geographically spread team
- Excellent communication and report writing skills
- Registered with a relevant professional body (e.g. British Society Soil Science)
- Desirable: working knowledge of UK environmental legislation, construction project implications on agricultural land, and understanding of UK agricultural practice and business issues
- Enjoy working as part of a team and being accountable for your work
- Working knowledge of applied GIS
- Full driving license and enjoy working outdoors
