Overview
Assistant Soil Science Consultant / Soil Science Consultant at WSP in the UK & Ireland. The role involves supporting the growth of the soil team within the Ground & Water service line of the Earth & Environment business. The position is office- and site-based with a roughly 50/50 split between site and office work, flexible location, and a mix of remote and in-person collaboration.
What you will do
- Undertake fieldwork/site visits and support the production of written reports for Agricultural Land Classification (ALC), Soil Resource Assessments, and tailored assessments for Environmental Statements.
- Work with our Nature Advisory and Landscape teams to support Landscape and Ecological Management Plans.
- Manage data to support technical reporting; provide advice and support to colleagues; liaise with clients, landowners, contractors, statutory authorities and third parties.
- Assist in the growth of the soils team, collaborating with colleagues across Ground & Water, Nature Advisory, Landscape, Environmental Planning, and Sustainability Policy & Compliance.
- Support bidding, project delivery, and financial management for projects with appropriate supervision.
What we are looking for / Qualifications
- Degree level qualification in Soil Science, or similar (physical geology, environmental science) with 3–5 years of relevant practical experience.
- Experience in completing Agricultural Land Classification (ALC) surveys, Soil Resource Surveys and site supervision during construction works (ideally to BSSS competency standards).
- Strong health & safety awareness for site work.
- Team player with the ability to collaborate with a geographically dispersed team.
- Excellent communication and report-writing skills.
- Registered with a relevant professional body (e.g. British Society of Soil Science).
- Working knowledge of UK environmental legislation, implications of construction projects on agricultural land, and UK agricultural practices and business issues (desirable).
- Working knowledge of applied GIS; full driving license; enjoyment of outdoor work.
