Overview
In this role you will lead and shape the technical direction for major ports, terminals and maritime infrastructure across the UK, Ireland, Europe and selected international markets.
You will act as a senior technical sponsor and project director, guiding multidisciplinary teams and influencing client strategy for high-impact projects.
You’ll drive technical excellence, capability development, and growth of WSP’s Maritime business, while mentoring leaders and elevating governance and safety standards.

Responsibilities
- Act as Project Director or senior technical sponsor for major maritime, port and terminal programmes across multiple countries
- Define technical vision and delivery strategy for large infrastructure programmes
- Provide senior multidisciplinary oversight across civil, geotechnical, coastal, structural, electrical, environmental, buildings, transport and cost disciplines
- Lead technical challenge on constructability, phasing, resilience, automation, electrification, decarbonisation, and operational integration
- Lead strategic pursuits and win strategies to expand repeat business within the Maritime portfolio
- Build trusted advisor relationships with senior client stakeholders
- Mentor and develop senior engineers and future leaders; strengthen governance and delivery excellence
- Contribute to medium-term business strategy, capability growth, and market engagement
- Develop project governance, technical standards, and knowledge-sharing practices
- Drive recruitment, succession planning and capability development across the Maritime business
- Represent WSP externally at conferences, forums, and industry groups
- Champion health, safety and wellbeing culture through leadership and safety governance
- Key requirements
- Significant experience delivering and leading major maritime, terminal or infrastructure programmes
- Chartered Engineer status with recognised technical authority
- External profile in ports and maritime sector (client leadership, industry engagement, publications)
- Experience contributing to business growth, strategy development and major opportunity conversion
- Proven project director capability across masterplanning through detailed design and delivery phases
- Strong governance understanding (FIDIC or equivalent, QA/QC, risk and commercial controls)
- Ability to combine technical depth with delivery judgement and client credibility
- Experience in emerging port requirements (automation, electrification, climate resilience, asset management) preferred
- Experience operating across multiple countries and delivery cultures
