In this Technical Director role, you provide strategic geotechnical leadership for major programmes across the UK and internationally, setting standards and guiding complex ground engineering work. Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership and strategic direction for major geotechnical programmes and complex ground engineering projects
- Act as a recognised geotechnical authority, setting standards and advising on challenging problems
- Lead technical governance across projects to ensure quality, risk management and professional excellence
- Build and maintain relationships with clients, industry bodies and external stakeholders as a senior ambassador for WSP geotechnics
- Develop long-term client account strategies and pursue major opportunities, frameworks and flagship projects
- Direct multidisciplinary teams across projects and regions, aligning resources and expertise with business needs
- Drive technical innovation, sustainability, digital delivery, data management and emerging technologies
- Mentor and sponsor senior staff to develop capability and support succession planning
- Drive business growth through technical excellence, market insight and thought leadership
- Represent WSP externally at industry forums and client engagements to enhance reputation
Key requirements
- Extensive experience leading complex geotechnical engineering programmes on high-profile infrastructure and development projects
- Deep expertise in geotechnical engineering, engineering geology and ground engineering with specialist knowledge in one or more disciplines
- Experience as a technical authority providing governance, assurance and strategic direction
- Strong commercial awareness with a track record of winning work and growing client relationships
- Exceptional client-facing and stakeholder management skills with senior decision-making influence
- Proven ability to develop, inspire and lead high-performing technical teams across locations and disciplines
- Experience shaping technical strategy and driving innovations with measurable benefits
- Active involvement in professional institutions, industry groups or technical committees; Chartered status
- Fellowship status or equivalent recognition would be advantageous
