A little more about your role… This is an opportunity to join our Local Government Highways and Bridges team based in Exeter, Devon. As a Senior or Principal Engineer, you will provide a vital role in both supporting senior members of the team to deliver projects whilst also supporting junior colleagues develop their skills and knowledge. We have a strong track record of working closely with our clients and this role will provide the opportunity for development and progression within your career.

No two days will be the same, but you could be expected to:

  • Lead on Traffic Engineering projects, managing all aspects of delivery from technical order (TRO) production through to compliant placement of infrastructure signage.
  • Be a Technical Design Lead and Project Manager to deliver projects which help safeguard the future of the local transport network.
  • Act as a Line Manager for people in your Communities Highways team, as well as providing guidance and mentoring for junior staff.
  • Prepare and review reports, drawings, schedules and other documents in accordance with local procedures and guidance.
  • Coordinate and communicate with multi-disciplinary supporting teams from across the UK and the globe in delivery of projects as well as Clients and stakeholders.
  • Work directly with our clients to deliver their projects, collaboratively, on time, on budget and with consistency.
  • Construction supervision for delivery of schemes.

Your Team: We provide highways design and consultancy services for local authority clients within the South West. We are passionate about supporting our Local Authority clients to deliver improvements for local communities, prioritising Active and Healthy Travel modes, and caring about the provision of mobility across the transport network. Our team is based in WSP’s vibrant city centre office alongside other teams from our diverse business, there is easy access to public transport links and city centre amenities.

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…

  • A passion for working on projects that make a real difference to local communities.
  • Experience and knowledge in the development of highway, traffic and civil engineering projects, especially those that deliver sustainable and active travel benefits through the utilisation of moving and static highway restrictions.
  • A proven ability to manage projects and individuals, to prioritise, achieve deadlines and to work with minimal supervision.
  • Good spoken and written communication skills, with the ability to liaise with others including public sector officials, members of the public and other senior colleagues.
  • The ability to manage stakeholders is a key requirement of this role.
  • Good working knowledge of the UK TSRDG 2016 and associated Traffic Act. This should include experience of the governance and approval procedures.
  • Ideally Chartered or Incorporated Professional but applicants with experience and working towards professional qualification will be considered.
  • Experience in the use of GIS mapping software products would be advantageous.
