Overview

In this Principal/Associate Engineer role, you will lead and deliver highway and bridge projects in Cardiff as part of WSP’s Local Government team. You’ll guide design, inspection and feasibility work while mentoring a team of six engineers and technicians. The position blends technical excellence with team leadership to grow Cardiff’s bridges capability. Expect varied challenges across the project lifecycle, from design to business case development, with a strong focus on collaboration with clients and regional leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Design bridges and highways structures
  • Bridge strengthening, repair, inspections and assessments
  • Provide general civil/structural support to the wider business
  • Feasibility studies and options appraisals
  • Prepare documents, risk assessments, feasibility studies and cost estimates
  • Supervise and mentor colleagues, developing professionals
  • Financial and project management of schemes

Key requirements

  • Chartered Civil or Structural Engineer
  • Experience in bridge design, maintenance and assessment (on-site and design office)
  • Project management experience in bridges/structural projects
  • Knowledge of design, maintenance and supervision of structures; track record of innovation
  • Knowledge of DMRB and MCDHW for structural schemes
  • Understanding and use of Eurocodes in bridge design
  • Experience in design/assessment of steel, reinforced and prestressed concrete bridges
  • Strong communication and client relationship skills; adaptability; contribution to team development
