What You’ll Do

  • Lead the development and implementation of the Women’s Senior Team attacking philosophy
  • Design and deliver a clear attacking game model including phase play, transitions, set-piece attack and finishing strategies
  • Deliver outstanding on and off-field coaching to maximise player understanding, engagement and performance
  • Support squad selection, planning and campaign delivery aligned to the Welsh Rugby DNA
  • Contribute to a high-performance environment and culture that drives sustained success
  • Build strong relationships with clubs and pathway programmes to ensure alignment and player development

Role Purpose

To support the Head Coach in achieving the ambitions for the women’s senior team by providing technical, tactical and strategic rugby expertise, and by assisting in the alignment of internal teams and external clubs and pathways through close and influential relationships.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop a clear and comprehensive attacking philosophy for the Women’s senior team and wider pathways
  • Design attacking style, principles, systems and game solutions across phase play, set-piece attacks, exits, transitions, kicking and finishing strategies
  • Develop clear language and terminology for the attacking philosophy aligned to the overall game model and Welsh Rugby DNA
  • Deliver coaching and learning on and off the field using a variety of styles to maximise engagement and ownership of the attacking game model
  • Support the Head Coach in the development of a clear vision and “what it takes to win” model for the women’s senior team
  • Co‑create an outstanding performance, development environment and culture for players and staff, both in and out of camp
  • Support squad selection in alignment with Welsh DNA and overall organisational goals
  • Participate in the development of operational plans for cycles, seasons, campaigns and events (training camps, matches, tournaments)
  • Provide comprehensive session, week, campaign and season review information and materials
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary support teams and maintain alignment across WRU
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with Welsh professional clubs and other stakeholders
  • Support creation and maintenance of individual development plans for senior international players
  • Provide visible engagement in coaching, selection and development activities along the player pathway
  • Support WRU coach development activities on an agreed number of occasions per year
  • Maintain personal development to keep knowledge and practice at the highest level
  • Act as role model and ambassador for the WRU, representing the team in media, communications and strategic awareness
  • Participate in marketing and sponsorship activities as needed

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Level 3 Rugby coaching licence or recognised equivalent
  • Demonstrable attack coaching experience at club and/or international level with a strong track record of success
  • Exceptional on and off field coaching delivery using varied methods and approaches
  • Experience identifying, managing and developing talent with focus on young player development
  • Demonstrated contribution to high‑performing, positive team culture
  • Understanding of detailed planning for performance to achieve objectives across timeframes
  • Growth mindset and evidence of continued professional development
  • Experience using data and measurement processes to inform coaching
  • Good relationships with club staff and stakeholders
  • Understanding and belief in a long‑term developmental DNA for Welsh Rugby
  • Highly resilient and comfortable in high‑profile role with public scrutiny
  • Commitment to live in Wales and be present full‑time
  • Basic technology proficiency for coaching and analysis

WRU Requirements

The WRU requires proficiency in Microsoft packages, excellent written and verbal communication, ability to build relationships, communication in Welsh desirable, and a valid UK driver’s licence. The role is subject to a DBS check.
