We’re partnering with a leading technology consultancy delivering a large-scale government cloud migration programme. They are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager with a strong Platform Engineering background to lead a growing team and drive the evolution of modern, secure cloud platforms. This role sits within a Cloud Centre of Excellence (CCoE) and the successful candidate will need to have excellent stakeholder management and interpersonal skills.
As Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of platform engineers (currently 3 senior/lead engineers with growth planned and junior hires underway), while providing technical direction and best practice across the wider organisation. You will play a key role in shaping and delivering a secure, scalable cloud landing zone, supporting multiple product teams as they migrate and build infrastructure in the cloud.
Key Responsibilities- Lead and develop a team of platform engineers, including mentoring junior hires and shaping team growth
- Provide technical direction and governance across platform and infrastructure services
- Oversee delivery of platform build, maintenance, and continuous evolution
- Balance hands-on technical involvement with strategic leadership
- Own the design and implementation of cloud landing zones (AWS & Azure)
- Drive adoption of Infrastructure as Code, automation, and containerisation patterns
- Ensure platforms are designed with security, scalability, and resilience at their core
- Establish and enforce integration standards across the engineering lifecycle
- Support engineering teams with platform usage, CI/CD, and infrastructure design
- Develop reusable platform patterns and best practices
- Improve and standardise automation and deployment pipelines
- Collaborate with senior stakeholders across government and consultancy teams
- Translate technical concepts into clear guidance for non-technical audiences
- Work closely with Heads of Infrastructure and Cloud within the CCoE
- Embed security best practices into all platform and infrastructure design
- Ensure compliance with government standards and policies
- Lead on identifying and resolving complex service and platform issues
- Cloud: AWS & Azure
- Infrastructure as Code: Terraform
- Scripting & Automation: Bash, Ansible
- CI/CD & SCM: GitHub, GitHub Actions
- Strong background in Platform Engineering / DevOps leadership roles
- Proven experience managing and developing engineering teams
- Experience delivering cloud landing zones and large-scale migrations
- Deep knowledge of AWS and/or Azure
- Expertise in Terraform and infrastructure automation
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
- Experience working within complex, multi-team environments (government/public sector ideal but not essential)
- Work on a high-impact national programme
- Leadership role with real influence over platform strategy
- Fully remote contract with a competitive day rate
