We are partnering with a leading technology consultancy delivering a large-scale government cloud migration programme. They are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager with a strong Platform Engineering background to lead a growing team and drive the evolution of modern, secure cloud platforms. This role sits within a Cloud Centre of Excellence (CCoE) and the successful candidate will need to have excellent stakeholder management and interpersonal skills.

The Role

As Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of platform engineers (currently 3 senior/lead engineers with growth planned and junior hires underway), while providing technical direction and best practice across the wider organisation. You will play a key role in shaping and delivering a secure, scalable cloud landing zone, supporting multiple product teams as they migrate and build infrastructure in the cloud.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Delivery
    • Lead and develop a team of platform engineers, including mentoring junior hires and shaping team growth
    • Provide technical direction and governance across platform and infrastructure services
    • Oversee delivery of platform build, maintenance, and continuous evolution
    • Balance hands-on technical involvement with strategic leadership
  • Platform Engineering & Cloud
    • Own the design and implementation of cloud landing zones (AWS & Azure)
    • Drive adoption of Infrastructure as Code, automation, and containerisation patterns
    • Ensure platforms are designed with security, scalability, and resilience at their core
    • Establish and enforce integration standards across the engineering lifecycle
  • DevOps & Enablement
    • Support engineering teams with platform usage, CI/CD, and infrastructure design
    • Develop reusable platform patterns and best practices
    • Improve and standardise automation and deployment pipelines
  • Stakeholder Engagement
    • Collaborate with senior stakeholders across government and consultancy teams
    • Translate technical concepts into clear guidance for non-technical audiences
    • Work closely with Heads of Infrastructure and Cloud within the CCoE
  • Security & Governance
    • Embed security best practices into all platform and infrastructure design
    • Ensure compliance with government standards and policies
    • Lead on identifying and resolving complex service and platform issues

Tech Environment

  • Cloud: AWS & Azure
  • Infrastructure as Code: Terraform
  • Scripting & Automation: Bash, Ansible
  • CI/CD & SCM: GitHub, GitHub Actions

What We’re Looking For:

  • Strong background in Platform Engineering / DevOps leadership roles
  • Proven experience managing and developing engineering teams
  • Experience delivering cloud landing zones and large-scale migrations
  • Deep knowledge of AWS and/or Azure
  • Expertise in Terraform and infrastructure automation
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
  • Experience working within complex, multi-team environments (government/public sector ideal but not essential)

Why Apply?

  • Work on a high-impact national programme
  • Leadership role with real influence over platform strategy
  • Fully remote contract with a competitive day rate
  • Opportunity to shape and scale a growing engineering function

If you hit the above criteria, we'd love to hear from you!
