Job overview
The post-holder is responsible for the operation of the Andrology laboratory and the supervision of practitioners, and biomedical support workers. The post-holder has responsibility for ensuring the timely processing of samples alongside quality management system activities within their remit.
The post-holder is expected to apply scientific knowledge, skill and expertise at the required professional level for the full range of Andrology procedures, providing a high-quality service to patients. This level of responsibility is particularly important in Andrology where decisions may be made independently without the opportunity to refer to more senior staff. This post has direct clinical responsibilities for patient care through the provision of diagnostic services. The post-holder is expected to be involved in appropriate research.
Fertility Fusion is regulated and licenced by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) enabling them to use sperm preparations in assisted reproductive treatments. The post holder is expected to process these samples.
Main duties of the job
- ·Macroscopic and microscopic examination of semen specimens for investigations of infertility, post vasectomy and retrograde ejaculation.
- ·To aseptically examine, prepare semen for use in licensed treatment of patients.
- ·To authorise reports (verification).
- ·To ensure that all equipment is properly maintained.
- ·To undertake quality management system activities as required under the direction and responsibility of the Person Responsible. This includes, but not limited to document management, audits, asset management, validation/verification, risk management and IT support.
- ·Participation and co-ordination of verification and validation projects as well as acceptance testing of items used in laboratory processes.
- ·To ensure that equipment is properly calibrated and operated in accordance with procedures at all times.
- ·To co-operate with the Health & Safety team and Infection Prevention Control team to ensure that all procedures are carried out appropriately.

Knowledge
- Knowledge of ISO standards & methods of audit.
- A good knowledge of Andrology and the range of therapeutic treatment options in the area of reproductive medicine.
- Knowledge of Health and Safety policies and practice.
- Specialist level knowledge in Andrology.
- An understanding of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority’s, code of practice.
Skills
- Plan and prioritise workload.

- Substantial post registration experience in Medical Laboratory Science.

- Participation in NEQAS.
- Familiar with Quality Management systems.
- Experience of all Andrology technical procedures and analysis.
- Able to advise medical and nursing staff on interpretation of laboratory results.
- Teaching staff and students.
Qualifications
- Registration with Health and Care Professions Council as a Biomedical Scientist or Clinical Scientist.
- Honours degree in an appropriate science subject (such as Biomedical Science) or equivalent.
- Andrology qualification or completion of specialist diploma/equivalent.
- Professional registration (IBMS, ARCS or equivalent).
- Experience of UKAS accreditation.
- Counselling skills.
