Wrexham County Borough Council is seeking an exceptional and experienced education professional to join our Education Effectiveness team as a School Improvement Officer – ALN, Inclusion and Specialist Provision.

This is a strategic and influential role at the heart of our school improvement work. You will lead and shape the Local Authority's approach to improving provision and outcomes for learners with Additional Learning Needs (ALN) across mainstream schools, special schools, PRUs and specialist resource provisions.

Working alongside Headteachers, ALNCos, senior leaders, governors and partner services, you will provide a powerful combination of professional challenge, support, expertise and strategic leadership to secure sustainable improvement and reduce variation in outcomes and experiences for learners with ALN.

About the role

You will:

Provide strategic leadership for ALN and inclusion across Wrexham's education system.

Challenge and support schools to evaluate and improve the quality and impact of their ALN provision.

Lead improvement activity in schools requiring targeted or intensive support.

Quality assure specialist provision, including special schools, PRUs and resource provisions.

Support leaders to strengthen self-evaluation, quality assurance and improvement planning.

Promote high-quality inclusive pedagogy, adaptive teaching and person-centred approaches.

Develop leadership capacity through coaching, mentoring and professional learning.

Use data and evidence intelligently to identify priorities, evaluate impact and drive improvement.

Promote learner voice, family engagement and co-production.

Develop professional networks and communities of practice across schools and settings.

Work collaboratively with inclusion, safeguarding, wellbeing, attendance, social care and other services.

Represent Wrexham County Borough Council regionally and nationally, including working with Welsh Government, Estyn and other key partners.

This is an exciting opportunity to influence provision at both individual school and system level, ensuring that learners with ALN are empowered to achieve ambitious outcomes, participate fully in school life and prepare successfully for adulthood.

About you

We are looking for an inspirational and credible education leader with significant experience of ALN, inclusion, special education, PRU or specialist provision.

You will bring:

Experience of leadership in a special school, PRU or specialist resource provision.

Significant experience of leading improvement for learners with complex and additional learning needs.

A strong understanding of inclusive pedagogy, adaptive teaching and Curriculum for Wales.

Knowledge of the Additional Learning Needs and Education Tribunal (Wales) Act 2018.

Experience of working across different phases and settings.

A proven track record of improving provision, outcomes, attendance, wellbeing and engagement for learners with ALN.

Experience of supporting schools requiring intensive or targeted improvement.

The ability to make accurate, evidence-informed judgements and provide constructive professional challenge.

Strong communication, analytical and relationship-building skills.

The credibility and confidence to work effectively with Headteachers, Governors, Estyn, Welsh Government and other senior stakeholders.

A commitment to equity, inclusion, Welsh language and culture and high expectations for every learner.

You will need to demonstrate professional credibility, integrity, resilience, strategic thinking and a genuine ambition to improve outcomes for children and young people with ALN.
