Location: Norfolk, VA

SUMMARY: WR has an opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer I to provide engineering support for a variety of programs and projects, with an emphasis on new system design and development. This position will support the design, analysis, integration, and testing of mechanical systems and components while working in a fast-paced environment with limited oversight and quick-turn deliverables.

Position responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Perform structural analysis and mechanics of materials evaluations, including stress, deflection, buckling, and fatigue considerations.
  • Conduct wind loading calculations and analyses of outdoor structures and equipment installations.
  • Develop mechanical designs for fabricated assemblies utilizing aluminum, steel, fiberglass, composites, and other structural materials.
  • Evaluate material properties, corrosion mechanisms, and material selection for harsh outdoor and coastal environments.
  • Select fasteners and design bolted joints and other mechanical attachment methods.
  • Evaluate adhesive selection and bonding techniques for structural and environmental applications.
  • Support manufacturing and fabrication processes, including machining, welding, sheet metal fabrication, and composite construction.
  • Create and maintain CAD models and engineering drawings.
  • Develop and maintain engineering documentation and participate in drawing control and design review processes.
  • Perform thermal analyses and apply heat transfer and cooling system fundamentals.
  • Apply fluid mechanics principles to HVAC systems and equipment cooling applications.
  • Support the mechanical integration of electronic equipment, racks, enclosures, and infrastructure systems.

Candidates must possess the following knowledge, skills, and experience:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related scientific discipline.
  • Zero (0)+ years of engineering design, test, and analysis experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Shock and vibration
    • Airborne and structure-borne noise
    • Heat transfer and thermal dissipation
    • Chassis, circuit card, connector, and harness layout
    • Mechanical design optimization for accessibility, repair, and replacement
  • Understanding of technical drawing principles and engineering documentation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Internship or co-op experience in a relevant engineering field.
  • Familiarity with engineering software tools.
  • Experience working with CAD software; Autodesk products preferred.
