An experienced Driver Training & Development Manager responsible for leading and developing driver training, assessment, compliance and performance programmes across a multi-site transport operation. Focused on ensuring drivers operate safely, professionally and in full compliance with legal, operational and customer requirements. Responsible for driving continuous improvement through effective onboarding, coaching, performance management, incident investigation and compliance monitoring while supporting a strong safety culture throughout the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Driver Recruitment, Onboarding & Development: Support the recruitment, assessment and onboarding of new drivers, ensuring all processes are completed compliantly and efficiently. Develop and continuously improve driver induction and onboarding programmes to ensure drivers are fully prepared for operational requirements. Monitor probationary performance, providing coaching, support and development plans where required. Work closely with operational, fleet and HR teams to ensure drivers are fully equipped and ready to commence duties.
  • Training & Competency Management: Design, implement and manage driver training programmes to ensure compliance with company standards and industry regulations. Provide leadership and support to Driver Trainers and Driver Mentors, ensuring consistency of training delivery and assessment standards. Coordinate Driver CPC training and any third-party development programmes, maintaining compliance across the driver workforce. Conduct driver observations, assessments and coaching sessions to improve competency, safety awareness and operational performance.
  • Driver Performance, Compliance & Coaching: Monitor driver performance, telematics data, compliance reports and behavioural trends to identify improvement opportunities. Deliver targeted coaching, refresher training and corrective action plans to reduce infringements and improve driver standards. Support disciplinary investigations by providing evidence, performance data and training records where required. Identify operational factors contributing to driver performance issues and work with relevant stakeholders to implement corrective measures.
  • Licensing, Compliance & Safety Management: Maintain accurate and auditable records relating to driver licences, Driver CPC qualifications, assessments and compliance requirements. Ensure all drivers maintain valid licences, qualifications and legal entitlements required for their roles. Support incident investigations, identifying root causes and implementing preventative measures to reduce future occurrences. Work closely with Compliance, Health & Safety and Operations teams to promote best practice and improve safety performance.
  • Reporting & Continuous Improvement: Produce and analyse driver performance and compliance reports, identifying trends and recommending improvement initiatives. Support management teams with driver safety programmes, compliance objectives and operational improvements. Contribute to strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing driver standards, reducing incidents and improving overall transport performance.
  • Leadership & Team Development: Provide guidance, coaching and support to Driver Trainers, Mentors and operational teams. Conduct performance reviews and identify development opportunities for direct reports. Promote a culture of accountability, professionalism and continuous improvement throughout the driver workforce.

Essential Requirements

  • Valid Category C+E (Class 1) Driving Licence.
  • Valid Driver CPC Qualification.
  • Valid Digital Tachograph Card.
  • Driver Trainer, Train the Trainer or equivalent recognised training qualification.
  • Driver Assessor qualification or equivalent accreditation.
  • Strong coaching, communication and influencing skills.
  • Experience managing driver training, compliance and performance programmes.
  • Strong organisational and administrative abilities.
  • Ability to analyse driver performance data and implement improvement initiatives.

Desirable Requirements

  • Transport Manager CPC (Road Haulage).
  • IOSH Managing Safely, NEBOSH or equivalent Health & Safety qualification.
  • Experience using telematics and driver monitoring systems.
  • Experience producing and presenting KPI reports.
  • Experience supporting multi-site transport operations.
