Worth Abbey is a Community of English Benedictine monks living a life of Prayer & Hospitality - with a vibrant Parish and Retreat House.

The role involves playing for liturgies at Worth Abbey, complementing the offerings of our existing rota of highly-skilled and devoted professional organists.

We seek a highly motivated organist who is keen to develop their accompaniment and repertoire skills further, particularly within the context of a Roman Catholic environment. This position may be best suited to a postgraduate applicant, although applications from strong gap-year and undergraduate organists will also be considered.

The position is available initially for one year (renewable for a further period of up to one year by mutual agreement), with the start date being negotiable. Ideally, we are looking for a scholar from mid-October 2026.

The Abbey Organ Scholarship attracts an annual stipend of £9,250 and offers flexibility in terms of ‘time off’ where holidays can be arranged in advance. On-site accommodation in a shared environment is provided.

We are committed to safeguarding children; all employees must have the ability to understand and adhere to Child Protection and Safeguarding legislation. The role holder's safeguarding responsibilities are set out in the job description. References may be taken prior to interview, and DBS and other vetting checks will be conducted on the successful applicant.

This role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the amendments to the Exceptions Order 1975, 2013 and 2020. The amendments provide that when applying for certain jobs and activities, certain spent convictions and cautions are ‘protected’, so they do not need to be disclosed to employers. If they are disclosed, employers cannot take them into account.

The MOJ’s guidance on the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the Exceptions Order 1975 provides information about which convictions must be declared during job applications and related exceptions. Further information about filtering offences can be found in the DBS filtering guide. Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006 Section 7 (1) (a) states that it is an offence to apply for the role if you are barred from engaging in regulated activity relevant to children.
