World Zombie Day is looking for a calm, authoritative, organised, Parade Operations & Head Steward to lead the practical delivery of World Zombie Day’s stewarding, participant information, and route operations. Prior experience in parades, protests, marathons, or other similar gatherings strongly desired.
The postholder will support safe crowd flow, coordinate volunteer stewards, communicate clear instructions to participants, and promptly escape any safety, welfare or public-order concern to the Event Organiser and, where appropriate, emergency services.
Key responsibilities
- Produce a practical plan for steward coverage at each stretch of the walk, pinch points, crossing points, meeting points, and the finish.
- Recruit, allocate, brief and supervise volunteer stewards.
- Run a route walk-through and steward briefing approximately one week before the event.
- Set up a simple chain of command: Event Organiser Head Steward volunteer stewards
- Ensure participants know where to register, assemble, move, pause, and disperse.
- Monitor crowd movement and identify bottlenecks, gaps in coverage, hazards, welfare concerns or overcrowding risks.
- Give calm, clear verbal instructions to help the walk move safely and prevent unnecessary obstruction.
- Ask photographers, spectators or participants to stop behaviour that is disrupting the route or creating an immediate safety issue; if it continues, report it to the Event Organiser rather than attempting enforcement.
- Keep volunteer stewards focused on their assigned posts and arrange relief, breaks and redeployment where needed.
- Maintain contact with base camp, the organiser and route stewards through a designated WhatsApp group, phone, or radios.
- Pass approved urgent messages to the event’s social channels for example, assembly instructions, a delayed departure or route update.
- Record significant incidents, actions taken and any handover to police, ambulance or other officials.
£500 fixed stipend, freelance event-services contract. This covers one planning meeting, preparation of a stewarding and route-coverage plan, one volunteer route walk-through/briefing, and full attendance on the event day.
