COMMERCIAL EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The Commercial Executive Director plays a pivotal role in shaping the organisation’s commercial strategy and driving revenue growth across broadcast, media rights, partnerships, sponsorships and marketing/PR. This role provides strategic direction, cohesion, and accountability across the organisation’s commercial pillars — ensuring each business stream operates effectively toward shared financial and brand objectives. The Executive Director will bring together the leaders of each pillar, set clear performance targets, and provide strategic guidance on where to focus efforts, how to optimise outcomes, and the type of opportunities to pursue for maximum impact.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Strategic Leadership & Oversight: Define and implement the overarching commercial strategy for the organisation, aligning all revenue‑generating streams under a unified direction. Set clear performance and growth targets for the respective functional directors (Broadcast, Media Rights, Partnerships, Marketing/PR). Provide strategic counsel and direction on market positioning, partnership models, pricing, and monetisation opportunities. Ensure commercial objectives are integrated into the organisation’s wider business and event strategies.
- Broadcast & Media Rights: Oversee the global media rights strategy, ensuring optimal reach and value across markets. Partner with the Broadcast Director in identifying and negotiating partnerships with broadcasters and digital platforms. Evaluate emerging media landscapes and advise on rights packaging, distribution strategies, and long‑term content monetisation.
- Partnerships & Sponsorships: Provide strategic direction on partnership acquisition and retention, ensuring alignment with brand positioning and financial goals. Partner with the Commercial Partnerships Director with market insights, deal frameworks, and negotiation strategies for high‑value clients. Oversee the development of innovative sponsorship models that deliver measurable Return On Investment for partners.
- PR & Marketing: Ensure marketing and communications strategies amplify the organisation’s commercial objectives and strengthen its brand equity. Partner the Marketing and PR Director in building campaigns that elevate fan engagement, partner visibility, and global awareness. Oversee alignment between commercial messaging, brand narrative, and event delivery.
- Collaboration & Organisational Integration: Foster strong collaboration with the Events and Operations teams, partnering to align strategies and ensure the seamless delivery of commercial and organisational objectives. Collaborate with internal stakeholders to integrate commercial strategy across all business areas. Champion cross‑departmental communication and accountability to drive unified performance.
- Leadership & Governance: Provide mentorship, strategic alignment, and decision support to functional directors under the commercial umbrella. Ensure sound governance, transparent reporting, and data‑driven decision‑making across all commercial areas. Represent the commercial division at executive level, contributing to broader organisational strategy and long‑term planning.
REQUIREMENTS
Essential: Proven senior‑level experience in sports, entertainment, or media industries, with a strong track record in commercial leadership. Demonstrated success in managing broadcast/media rights, sponsorship sales, and partnership development. Strategic thinker with strong negotiation and relationship management skills. Experience leading marketing and PR teams in a sports or entertainment context is highly desirable. Strong understanding of global sports business landscape and media trends. Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management abilities.
