We’re the world’s largest seller of pre‑loved books — a certified B Corp on a mission to become the Planet’s Bookstore. Since 2002 we’ve rehomed over 100 million books, helped millions of customers read more and waste less, and built a business that proves sustainability and commercial ambition belong together. Now we’re growing fast — and we need our IT infrastructure to keep pace.

The role involves reporting to the Senior IT Manager, being the go‑to expert across our infrastructure — owning 1st, 2nd and 3rd line support, leading complex projects, and ensuring our systems perform at the level our business demands. You’ll troubleshoot advanced hardware, software and network issues, manage our Microsoft server environments, and collaborate across the business to deliver infrastructure solutions that actually work. You’ll take ownership of IT projects end‑to‑end — from scoping and planning through to delivery — with security best practice running through everything you do. This isn’t a break‑fix role. It’s for someone who thinks ahead, documents properly, and raises the bar for how IT runs at WoB.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Providing expert 1st, 2nd and 3rd line support — resolving infrastructure issues across the group promptly and to SLA
  • Installing, configuring and maintaining Microsoft Windows servers, Microsoft 365, Active Directory and Hyper‑V environments
  • Leading the planning, implementation and testing of complex IT projects — server migrations, system upgrades and beyond
  • Performing system monitoring, maintenance and performance tuning to keep infrastructure secure and available
  • Providing end‑user support for Windows laptops, desktops, mobile devices and other hardware
  • Creating and owning documentation — system configs, technical procedures, project plans and user guides
  • Staying current on infrastructure and security trends and proactively recommending improvements

What we’re looking for:

  • Proven hands‑on experience with Microsoft Windows, Microsoft 365, Active Directory and Hyper‑V
  • Strong networking knowledge including security concepts and protocols
  • Experienced across 1st, 2nd and 3rd line support and comfortable managing service desk tickets at volume
  • Track record of managing and delivering complex IT infrastructure projects end‑to‑end
  • Familiar with ITIL frameworks and comfortable working within them
  • A clear communicator — able to translate technical detail for non‑technical colleagues and stakeholders
  • Self‑sufficient and collaborative: someone who gets on with it and brings others along
  • Relevant certifications (Azure Administrator, MCSE, CISSP or similar) are a bonus.

Why World of Books?

  • A mission that genuinely matters — B Corp certified, with sustainability at the core of every decision
  • A business growing fast enough that your work will have real, visible impact
  • A collaborative team that’s raising the bar on how technology supports the business
  • Goring‑by‑Sea, West Sussex (hybrid — minimum 2 days per week in office), with a team that spans the UK, US and Hungary
  • A culture that cares about doing things right — for customers, for colleagues, for the planet

If you’re an infrastructure engineer who wants to do meaningful work in a business that moves fast and stands for something — we’d love to hear from you. World of Books is a certified B Corporation.
