What does the Technical Support Team do?

The London Office Technical Support function provides oversight and coordinated support to the Regional Centres and Members. The key purpose is promoting a collaborative and sustainable approach in the delivery of ‘UNITY Towards Nuclear Excellence’ and the Action for Excellence framework. We work closely with the Regional Centres’ technical teams to ensure industry performance improvement through effective Member support.

The team work closely with the industry Chief Nuclear Officers (CNO) to run the annual Global CNO Forum, as well as co-ordinate both the Regional Centre & Global CNO Advisory Committee structure, and the WANO Industry Working Groups (I-WGs). These groups are CNO owned, Member led and focus on the key, causal factors constraining industry performance improvement.

The team also co-ordinates with the Regional Centres to ensure effective and prioritised New Unit Assistance is delivered to all new units worldwide that are under construction, being commissioned or undertaking early operations. In addition, we are responsible for setting WANO strategy regarding the early engagement of future New Entrants and New Technology Operators to our rapidly expanding nuclear industry.

Finally, we work closely with like-minded industry organisations, including the International Atomic Energy Authority (IAEA), and the Institute of Nuclear Power Operators (INPO) in the sharing of learning and experience across the industry.

At a period of significant change within the nuclear industry the New Unit Assistance Working group is working together with INPO to help link together, share learning and support the new nuclear power stations in their journey to operational readiness.
