The predicted salary is between 72000 - 88000 £ per year.

The role involves owning the backend systems that Letly runs on, including the architecture that other engineers build upon. These systems are critical for managing real people's money, homes, and legal exposure, where correctness, reliability, and scale are essential.

This is a senior-to-staff hire. At the senior level, you will own systems others build on, make architectural decisions, set patterns, and raise the bar around you. At the staff level, you will own the technical direction of a domain, decide what gets built and how, unblock other engineers, and be accountable for system behaviour under load.

What you'll work on:

  • Money movement: Rent, deposits, and payouts through pooled client-money accounts, focusing on idempotent processing and split-settlement.
  • Reconciliation & bookings: A penny-accurate, self-healing ledger reconciling bank activity across thousands of tenancies.
  • Event-driven consistency: Services coordinating over Pub/Sub with sagas across offer, contract, tenancy, and payment.
  • AI harnesses in production: Deploying agentic AI into operational settings with necessary guardrails and observability.

Our stack: We build on NestJS and TypeScript on GCP/GKE, with MongoDB, Redis, and GCP Pub/Sub. You don't need to arrive fluent in it; we hire strong backend engineers experienced with any robust framework.

How we build: We focus on small, well-factored services, TDD and DDD as defaults, trunk-based CI/CD, and clean rollbacks.

What we're looking for:

  • 6+ years building and operating production backend systems (more for staff).
  • Fluency in at least one backend language and framework.
  • Real distributed-systems experience: eventual consistency, idempotency, concurrency, and their failure modes at production scale.
  • Strong API and data modelling skills, plus cloud/containerised deployment experience.
  • AI-Native engineer: proficient in using AI across all layers of work.
  • Senior: a track record of designing systems for others to build on.
  • Staff: experience setting technical direction across several services or teams.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with MongoDB and GCP/GKE.
  • Familiarity with event-driven architecture and message brokers.
  • Experience in payments, ledgers, reconciliation, or financial-correctness domains.
  • Background in fintech or regulated, high-trust environments.

Who does well here:

  • Precise about correctness — these systems move money;
