Job Description

The Household Assistant is responsible for maintaining high standards of cleanliness, hygiene, and safety across the School’s buildings. The post holder will provide a professional, reliable, and friendly service, ensuring that learning, working, and living environments are clean, safe, and welcoming for pupils, staff, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out cleaning duties including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, polishing, washing, and spray cleaning to required standards.
  • Clean classrooms, offices, corridors, stairwells, toilets, washrooms, and shower areas.
  • Replenish supplies such as toilet paper, hand towels, and cleaning materials as required.
  • Remove and dispose of rubbish and recycling in accordance with waste management procedures.
  • Undertake floor care, including scrubbing, polishing, and resealing as required.
  • Carry out laundry duties as directed.
  • Use powered cleaning equipment safely and in line with training and procedures.
  • Maintain personal and team compliance with health, safety, and hygiene regulations.
  • Report defects, damage, or health and safety concerns to the Household Manager.
  • Respond to emergency cleaning situations, including spillages or flooding.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to support a positive and effective team environment.
  • During school holidays, support enhanced cleaning and maintenance of accommodation and buildings.

Experience & Skills

Essential Criteria

  • Experience of cleaning, domestic, or facilities work (paid or voluntary).
  • Ability to clean to a high standard and follow set procedures and instructions.
  • Ability to use cleaning equipment safely and effectively (training provided if required).
  • Aware of health and safety and hygiene requirements in the workplace.

Desired Criteria

  • Previous experience working in a school, boarding environment, or similar setting.
  • Experience of using powered cleaning machinery.
  • Basic understanding of COSHH regulations.
  • Experience of laundry duties.
