Applications are invited for a Registrar / LAS SpR / Speciality Doctor / StR4+ in Lower GI Surgery. The post will commence as soon as possible (ASAP). This post offers the opportunity to develop general registrar level skills and possibly more advanced skills for those interested and those doctors with the appropriate experience to do so.

Responsibilities

  • Appropriate clinical responsibility for the care of patients delegated by the consultant to the charge.
  • Co‑responsibility for the proper functioning of the Lower GI Surgery department, including the supervision of junior medical staff.
  • Participation in the registrar on‑call rota and to provide cover in exceptional circumstances for colleague's absence.
  • Attend clinics, assess patients, formulate treatment decisions and seek advice from the consultant as appropriate.
  • Attend sessions with the consultant and assist or perform procedures as appropriate.
  • Run wards with consultant cover on site during the day, consultant off site after hours.
  • Participate in clinical audit.
  • Attend clinical meetings and case conferences as appropriate.
  • Work within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Teach and train staff in other medical disciplines, nursing and support staff.
  • Communicate with other team members as appropriate.
  • Co‑ordinate appropriate medical disciplines concerned with patient care and communicate with general practitioners and community agencies.
  • Assess, care and treat patients presenting acutely to the speciality and referred to the speciality.
  • Conduct daily ward rounds on inpatients under the consultant's care, supervising junior doctors while the patient is in their care.
  • In conjunction with the admitting clinical teams and the wider health economy, develop and implement integrated Lower GI Surgery pathways throughout the hospital/trust.
  • Participate in relevant audit for the department and quality assurance procedures.
  • Abide by the clinical & Corporate Governance policies of the hospital/trust.
  • Follow guidance from the GMC (General Medical Council) on Good Medical Practice.
  • Keep up to date with Lower GI Surgery knowledge by continuous medical education for the benefit of the patient and personal development.
  • Be flexible in the interests of patient care and to meet the needs of the department as decided by the general manager and clinical lead.
  • Contribute to the wider corporate and organisational needs of the hospital/trust as appropriate.
  • Adhere to hospital/trust procedures such as Health and Safety at Work, Equal Opportunities policies.
  • Work to the hospital/trust values: Put Patients First, Take Ownership, Respect Others, Be Positive.
  • Maintain personal and professional development and encourage staff development and training.
  • Attend statutory, essential, and mandatory training.
  • Respect confidentiality of all matters relating to employment and other staff members.
  • Comply with the requirements of the Data Protection Act 1998.

Job Plan

To be discussed with the Clinical Lead of GI Surgery and departmental service manager; all job plans are made with the agreement of the doctor and the needs of the Lower GI Surgery department.

Salary

The salary is based on the national salary scale as outlined in the Medical and Dental Terms and Conditions – £59,175 – £95,400 per annum, not inclusive of extra hours, which are paid in addition to the basic salary.

Professional Development

The post-holder will be required to keep up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the hospital/trust/GMC. The trust supports continuing professional development and provides time and financial support for these activities, and for GMC Revalidation.

Study Leave

Professional or study leave is granted for approved purposes and includes time off for study, research, teaching, examinations, visiting clinics external to the hospital/trust, and attending professional conferences. Study leave allowance is a maximum of 10 days per annum.

Essential Requirements

  • IELTS or OET (IELTS overall score 7.5 or OET Grade B) for IMG's.
  • GMC Registration Essential (General Medical Council). Guidance can be provided if needed.
  • Ability to cope with a varying workload.
  • Ability to act as part of a team.
