Overview
To participate in a structured programme to properly integrate and support newly qualified paramedics into the ambulance service workplace, enabling time to consistently apply academic knowledge, skills and placement experience into confident practice. The newly-qualified paramedic (NQP) will be expected to undertake a two-year consolidation of learning, including reflective practice and feedback, where through direct and indirect clinical supervision they will learn to apply their knowledge.
Responsibilities
- Respond to emergency and urgent calls, delivering high quality and effective prehospital care (within the scope of practice and competence) and transportation, including 999 emergencies, inter-hospital transfers, urgent hospital admissions and other allocated responses.
- Carry out assessment, care, treatment and transportation of patients as an operational practitioner, working in a variety of locations.
- Use appropriate advanced driving skills under blue light or normal traffic conditions when responding to or conveying the patient as required.
- Initiate appropriate care and effective treatment to patients in the prehospital environment, selecting and applying skills and equipment safely within education, competence and scope of practice.
- Operate within Trust clinical policies, JRCALC guidelines, protocols, procedures and SOPs, seeking advice or referring to a more senior clinician when deviation from protocols is necessary.
- Refer patients to appropriate health and social care agencies to reduce inappropriate demand for emergency services, seeking clinical advice as required.
- Deliver a flexible ambulance service response, cross professional boundaries as necessary, and strengthen the delivery of unscheduled care with clinical support as required.
- Maintain skill levels and knowledge to carry out procedures in accordance with professional guidelines (e.g., defibrillation, cannulation, intraosseous access, intubation, airway techniques, 12 lead ECG interpretation) and seek clinical advice as required.
- Ensure continuous duty of care to patients within HCPC Standards of Proficiency and within the scope of practice and competence of the role; monitor and treat until patient discharge, referral or handover.
- Make appropriate use of clinical decision support software where available.
- Record observations and findings accurately, including safeguarding issues, and keep records confidential in line with information governance.
- Work as an effective member of a multi-professional team, supporting non-registered staff as required without assuming supervision or management roles.
- Attend patients in clinical and non-clinical settings, accepting initial responsibility on scene and handing over to a more experienced paramedic/clinician when available.
- Undertake manual handling with appropriate safety measures for patients and staff, including bariatric patients.
- Complete documentation (including electronic patient records) per Trust guidelines and information governance.
- Promote Equality & Diversity and a non-discriminatory culture; identify and address behaviours that undermine equality and diversity.
- Adhere to clinical governance, drug protocols, and management of clinical supplies.
- Maintain professional conduct in line with HCPC principles and standards; keep HCPC registration current.
- Reflect on practice, maintain a portfolio of practice in line with HCPC guidance, and engage in CPD opportunities.
- Take part in performance reviews and development activities with a mentor/line manager; identify own development needs and seek appropriate training.
- Be an ambassador for the trust and uphold trust values and professionalism in all engagements.
- Attend training and development programmes deemed appropriate for the role.
- Carry out any other duties commensurate with the post/role as required by professional and service developments.
Essential Requirements
- Ability to act as part of a team and cope with varying workloads.
- IELTS (7.5 with 7.0 in each module) or OET Overall grade B for overseas AHP professionals.
- HCPC Registration Required (Health & Care Professions Council).
- DBS/CRB disclosure requirements as applicable; international police checks or character references for overseas candidates as required.
