HCPC registration is required. The post holder may work as a solo practitioner or as part of an ambulance crew for the assessment, care, treatment and transportation of emergency, urgent and routine calls, providing advanced clinical interventions (including drug therapies at scene) and may administer medication within PGD guidelines. May undertake emergency driving and work in various locations including ambulance/rapid response vehicles, patients’ homes, primary care settings and emergency departments. The post holder will provide clinical leadership and mentorship to support delivery of high quality out-of-hospital care and will develop an integrated approach to patient care with other primary and secondary care providers to maximise local treatment and home discharge where appropriate.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Autonomously assess and diagnose within the scope of practice, applying JRCALC guidance, HCPC Code of Professional Practice and local NEAS procedures; triage patients to prioritise needs.
  • Communicate with patients and others to determine and apply the correct ambulance equipment and paramedic skills to meet patient requirements.
  • Provide care, plan and implement treatment, continually evaluate and advise patients and others.
  • Handle and administer drugs and controlled drugs.
  • Invasive procedures (e.g., intravenous cannulation, intubation, needle thoracentesis, external jugular cannulation).
  • Cardiac interventions (manual defibrillation, 12-lead ECG recognition, interpretation and treatment including STEMI diagnosis).
  • Maintain thorough and contemporaneous records of patient care and treatment, ensuring documentation is completed promptly and accurately.
  • Communicate and report patient history, condition and treatment to a full range of medical staff.
  • Comply with national/local policies to determine appropriate treatment/destination; initiate appropriate care pathways and transport to hospital if required or provide mobile treatment/care to discharge at patient’s home where appropriate.
  • Be responsible for the security of patient property and hand possessions to the appropriate agency when required.
  • Recognise life-extinct (ROLE) where appropriate under JRCALC guidance and complete related paperwork; liaise with police and other parties as needed.
  • Maximise use of appropriate alternative care pathways to minimise hospital admissions and ED attendances.

Vehicle and Environment

  • Use ambulance/RRV vehicles, equipment, radio, telecommunications and IT; report defects or malfunctions promptly according to Trust procedures.
  • Assess dynamic risk in environments and maintain health & safety for self and others.
  • Drive in emergency conditions safely using warning devices where appropriate; maintain advanced driving skills in line with legislation and the Highway Code.
  • Ensure station security, health & safety, cleanliness and proper documentation of fuel/store supplies.
  • Assist in ambulance/station duties (daily vehicle/equipment checks, cleaning, audits, decontamination, replenishing stock, and timely paperwork).

Administration

  • Complete patient and journey documentation promptly and ensure readiness for the next patient after handover.
  • Be a proactive leader in your field; ensure swift handover and turnaround times at hospitals.
  • Work on either an ambulance or rapid response vehicle as requested; adhere to all Trust policies/procedures at all times.
  • Participate in annual Performance Review and ensure NEAS07s are completed; report all accidents online before leaving shift; attend court as required to give evidence.

Training, Education and Development

  • Attend performance reviews and maintain knowledge, education and development to meet Trust standards; comply with mandatory and refresher training requirements.
  • Actively participate in the Trust’s annual Performance Review process.

Professional Registration and Standards

  • Maintain current professional registration (e.g., HCPC) and meet HCPC Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics, and CPD requirements with an up-to-date portfolio.
  • Adhere to HCPC standards of proficiency relevant to scope of practice; participate in clinical audit/research per Trust procedures.
  • Ensure controlled drug audits are completed on time and comply with clinical protocols/guidelines (e.g., JRCALC); promote safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults.
  • Demonstrate professional behaviour and support a fair and just culture; coach and develop others as appropriate.

Essential Requirements

  • Ability to work as part of a team and cope with a varying workload.
  • IELTS (7.5 overall with 7.0 in each module) or OET Grade B for overseas AHP professionals.
  • HCPC Registration is essential; the Trust can provide guidance if needed.
  • DBS/CRB considerations apply; overseas candidates may require international police checks or character references.
