As a podiatrist you will enhance people’s independence and quality of life by providing preventative care, diagnosing and treating a range of foot, ankle and lower‑leg problems, including infections, defects, injuries and conditions related to diabetes.

Responsibilities

  • Work in a hospital setting alongside GP surgery teams or in private practice, collaborating with nurses, physiotherapists and doctors.
  • Provide preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic care for patients of all ages.
  • Prescribe and supply non‑prescription medication for minor conditions, and prescription medications, orthotics, cryotherapy, electrosurgery, ultrasonics, specialised dressings and exercise therapies.
  • Prescribe, produce and fit orthotics and other aids and appliances.
  • Give advice and make referrals to other healthcare and social services professionals as appropriate.
  • Use therapeutic and surgical techniques to treat foot and lower‑leg issues, including nail and soft‑tissue surgery with local anaesthetic.
  • Deliver foot‑health education and explain treatment in accessible language.
  • Understand the mechanics of the body to preserve, restore and develop movement.
  • Work with athletes to address sports‑related injuries to legs and feet.
  • Operate a range of equipment, including surgical instruments, dressings, treatment tables, orthotic materials, lasers, grinders, shaping equipment, X‑ray and video gait‑analysis systems.
  • Undertake administrative tasks such as monitoring stock levels, maintaining equipment and ensuring secure storage.
  • Have a full driving licence for travel between appointments.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • HCPC registration (Health & Care Professionals Council) – required.
  • IELTS score of 7.5 with at least 7.0 in each module or OET Grade ‘B’ overall for overseas AHP professionals.
  • Full driving licence.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and cope with a varying workload.
  • Understanding and knowledge of science, particularly biology, anatomy and chemistry.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, including the ability to explain medical terminology and treatment in easy‑to‑understand language.
  • Practical skills and manual dexterity to carry out treatment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with other healthcare professionals such as doctors and nurses.
  • Listening skills and a calm, understanding manner for dealing with patients’ concerns and for handling anxious patients.
  • Confidence to use initiative, problem‑solving and reasoning skills, and judgement.
  • Excellent time‑management and organisational skills to manage a busy and varied workload.
  • An innovative, flexible, and motivated approach to work.
  • Good IT skills.
