This is a Full Time, Fixed Term position involving 25 hours teaching time per week. Term-time only for 6 months to cover maternity leave.

Salary – Teaching MPS

We are looking for someone who can make a positive difference to primary aged children with speech and language difficulties. If you are a qualified teacher with some experience of working with children with speech and language difficulties, have excellent communication skills and enjoy working as part of a small, dedicated team, this could be an exciting opportunity for you!

The Language Unit, part of the Integrated Physical and Sensory Service (IPaSS), is a highly regarded auxiliary education service that provides specialist support for children aged between 3 – 11 years with specific speech and/or language impairments. Our children are on roll in Hull Primary Schools and are referred by Speech and Language Therapists. They attend for two half day sessions per week in 5 groups of a maximum size of eight children. Sessions offer both small group and 1-1 work.

From September, the role of the team will be extended to provide additional training/upskilling to staff in settings across the city. Although a short-term post, the chance to work in a specialist setting offers excellent career development opportunities for the selected candidate!

Duties include:

  • Planning and delivering small group sessions and monitoring/recording progress towards targets set in Individual Communication Programmes
  • Creating resources used in classroom
  • The role may include delivering 1:1 outreach sessions for children in your teaching groups
  • The role may involve supporting colleagues to deliver training to educational settings
  • Establishing positive working relationships with children, acting as a role model and setting high expectations
  • The successful candidate will be expected to promote and safeguard the welfare of the children they support
  • Establishing positive working relationships with parents and other professionals, including staff in settings and Speech and Language Therapists to support the children’s progress.

If the postholder requires a Standard or Enhanced DBS disclosure the candidate is required to declare full details of everything on their criminal record unless the conviction/s and/or caution/s are considered “protected” in line with filtering rules for DBS checks.

ROLE AND PURPOSE

To provide specialist teaching to preschool/primary aged children who have specific speech/language disorders or severe delays in speech/language development. To provide specialist advice and support to mainstream settings and schools, parents/carers.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Promote and safeguard the welfare of children, young people.
  • Lead and develop the science curriculum as a vehicle for speech and language interventions.
  • Identify areas for development within the Unit and contribute to Unit self-evaluation and improvement planning.
  • Work closely with on-site Speech and Language Therapists in the delivery of specialist interventions.
  • Establish and maintain links with other agencies to support attainment and achievement.
  • Develop and maintain expertise in relation to speech/language development and use specialist knowledge to support schools and settings in meeting pupil’s needs.
  • Teach groups of children in the Unit and also during outreach visits to schools/settings, role modelling exemplary teaching practice.
  • Develop the role of Unit support staff through PPD and informal support to ensure their work supports pupil attainment/achievement.
  • Undertake any other duties commensurate with the post as instructed by the Head of Unit.
  • The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and associated legislation places responsibilities for health and safety on Hull City Council, as your employer and you as an employee of the council.

Compensation Grades: TEACHER

Pay Ranges: £32,916.00 - £51,048.00
