Job Description Summary: This is a full time, fixed term position for 1 year due to funding. The Independent Travel Trainer is expected to deliver personalised, practical training out in the community whilst being self-reliant and working on a 1:1 basis with an individual as a lone worker. As an Independent Travel Trainer, you will be expected to provide structured, centred support to individuals learning to travel independently. This includes assessing individual needs, planning, and delivering travel training sessions, supporting learners to build confidence using public transport, and promoting safety awareness.

The role requires strong communication, patience, and a commitment to safeguarding while encouraging independence and resilience. You will promote safe decision-making, problem-solving, and awareness of the local transport network, while maintaining accurate records and adhering to safeguarding procedures. The successful individual must be a good timekeeper, who is willing to travel around the city to meet the needs and travel requirements of the student. The individuals working week may vary depending on the child’s travel arrangements.

ROLE AND PURPOSE

To provide travel training to identified young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities in order to enable them to travel independently from home to their place of education or training.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • To promote and safeguard the welfare of children, young people and/or vulnerable adults.
  • To provide travel training for young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities travelling between their home address and their educational establishment.
  • Attend annual reviews of Education Health and Care Plans where necessary to ensure appropriate planning; liaising with parents/carers and Special Educational Needs Coordinators to develop individual travel training and personal safety plans for identified young people.
  • To plan travel routes and undertake risk assessments ensuring that young people are not exposed to unnecessary risks during or following training.
  • To complete an assessment of progress after each training session to identify progress and areas requiring further development and training.
  • Promote and encourage young people to undertake and gain an Independent Travel Training qualification.
  • To market and promote independent travel training scheme to young people, parents/carers, academies, schools, special schools, colleges and other providers.
  • Liaise with Children’s Disability Team to ensure that young people receive a coordinated approach to support them when moving to adulthood.
  • To provide management information and evaluation of the success of the independent travel training scheme including gathering feedback from young people and their families.
  • The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and associated legislation places responsibilities for health and safety on Hull City Council, as your employer and you as an employee of the council. In addition to the Councils overall duties, the post holder has personal responsibility for their own health, safety and wellbeing and that of other employees; additional and more specific responsibilities are identified in the Council’s Corporate H&S policy.
