This is a full-time, permanent position. To provide and promote a horticultural service which is customer-focused to the needs of the bereaved in the cemeteries and crematorium. To carry out associated grounds maintenance works.
Key Responsibilities:
- Undertake grass cutting duties in the cemeteries and crematorium, using pedestrian, handheld and ride-on type mowers and perform chemical applications to control weed growth.
- Perform general maintenance work to rose/shrub beds, including cultivation, removal of litter, weeds, debris and trimming back of bed edges.
- Perform pruning of roses/shrubs, removing all dead, broken and deceased branches to encourage plants to produce a good crop of flowering buds.
- Undertake planting of annual bedding, shrub roses and trees, ensuring good horticultural practices are followed.
- Work as a member of the Bereavement Services Team to foster good teamwork and inform the cemetery charge hand or supervisor of breaches in rules and regulations.
- Coordinate workload as directed by the cemetery charge hand and take relevant action where necessary.
- Undertake minor construction work, such as installing seat bases and erecting fencing.
- Maintain good working relationships with clergy, funeral directors, and memorial masons, providing a first-class customer-focused service for the bereaved.
- Assist in the committal service by lowering or placing the coffin into the grave and support families during interments.
- Keep machinery and equipment clean and in good working order, ensuring they are secure at the end of each working day.
- Prepare graves for excavation and assist with shoring and matting for interment.
- Support, mentor and develop new staff, modern apprentices, and various voluntary placements.
- Carry out exhumations of human cadavers, adhering to safe working practices and relevant legislation.
- Assist in emergencies to ensure consistent and uninterrupted services are provided.
- Understand and apply relevant legislation appropriate to burials, cremations, and exhumations.
- Deputise for the cemetery charge hand in their absence.
Compensation Grades: GRADES 5. Pay Ranges: £26,824.00 - £29,064.00.
