Are you an experienced HGV Technician ready to step into a leadership role while still staying hands-on? We’re looking for a Workshop Coordinator / Charge Hand to support our Workshop Manager and lead a busy, professional HGV workshop at our Bridgwater Depot. This is a great opportunity for a senior technician who enjoys problem-solving, mentoring apprentices, and keeping a workshop running smoothly.
The Role
You’ll be responsible for coordinating a team of technicians (including apprentices), managing job flow, and ensuring vehicles are repaired efficiently, safely, and right first time. You’ll act as the link between the workshop and front-of-house, helping maximise productivity and reduce vehicle downtime. You’ll still be hands-on when required, while also taking ownership of workflow, quality control, and technical support.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out HGV repairs and diagnostics when required
- Allocate job cards and manage daily workshop workload
- Support and mentor technicians and apprentices
- Ensure first-time fix to reduce VOR times
- Provide technical support to the Workshop Manager
- Liaise with external suppliers and 3rd-party repairers
- Ensure service, inspection, and compliance documentation is completed correctly
- Manage fleet maintenance systems and approve work within authority limits
- Maintain quality control of job sheets and repairs
- Monitor tools, equipment, and workshop inventory
- Support parts procurement and manage imprest stock
- Promote and implement preventative maintenance practices
- Ensure all health & safety standards are followed
Essential Skills & Experience
- Apprentice-trained HGV / Commercial Vehicle Technician
- City & Guilds Part 1 & 2 (or equivalent)
- Strong communication and decision-making skills
- Good planning, organisation, and time management
- Confident working in a leadership or senior technician role
Desirable (But Not Essential)
- Strong PC literacy
- Good understanding of fleet maintenance systems
- Refrigeration experience
