The Opportunity

We are recruiting for an experienced Laser Cutter Supervisor to join a well-established and growing engineering manufacturer in Nottingham. This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on supervisor with strong laser cutting experience and proven leadership skills to take responsibility for the day-to-day running of a busy laser department. This role combines shop floor leadership with technical expertise, ensuring production targets are achieved safely, efficiently and to the highest quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise the daily operation of the laser cutting department.
  • Lead, motivate and support a team of laser operators and production staff.
  • Ensure production schedules are completed safely, on time and to customer requirements.
  • Allocate workloads and monitor productivity across the department.
  • Set up and operate CNC laser cutting machines when required.
  • Carry out first-off inspections and ensure products meet quality standards.
  • Monitor production quality and resolve any issues promptly.
  • Minimise downtime by identifying production issues and implementing effective solutions.
  • Work closely with Production Planning, Programming, Quality and Operations to maintain efficient workflow.
  • Train, mentor and develop team members.
  • Conduct return-to-work meetings, probation reviews and day-to-day people management responsibilities.
  • Maintain high housekeeping standards throughout the department.
  • Promote a strong health and safety culture, ensuring safe working practices are followed at all times.
  • Liaise with the maintenance team regarding machine breakdowns and preventative maintenance.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to increase efficiency, quality and productivity.
  • Assist with recruitment, onboarding and training of new employees when required.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Previous experience supervising a laser cutting department or similar manufacturing team.
  • Extensive experience operating industrial laser cutting machinery.
  • Strong understanding of engineering drawings and sheet metal manufacturing.
  • Excellent knowledge of fabrication processes.
  • Ability to manage production priorities and meet demanding deadlines.
  • Strong leadership and people management skills.
  • Excellent communication and organisational abilities.
  • High attention to detail with a quality-focused approach.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Good computer literacy.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience operating Bystronic, Trumpf, Amada or similar laser cutting equipment.
  • Knowledge of ERP or MRP systems.
  • Lean Manufacturing or Continuous Improvement experience.
  • Forklift licence (preferred but not essential).
  • First Aid qualification (advantageous).
