About the Team
The Peakon team at Workday uses one of the largest employee engagement datasets in the world to understand what makes people productive and the triggers that might make someone choose to leave their job. They deliver insights to help customers run their businesses better and ensure employees are more satisfied, motivated, and engaged. The team uses a mixture of classical statistical modeling approaches and machine learning algorithms to understand how people feel about their experience at work, driven by the belief in radically changing the world of work by empowering employees to drive change.
About the Role
As Workday continues to invest in the Peakon team, they are seeking a Data Science Manager to lead their Product Data Science function. Product Data Scientists are embedded within multi‑functional teams that own their own roadmap, working collaboratively with engineering, UI/UX design, and product management. Your primary responsibility will be managing 4-5 Data Scientists at varying experience levels, helping them set and achieve goals, develop new skills, and support their overall career progression and personal development. You will also play a key role in hiring additional team members as the Peakon engineering team grows. You will focus on the data science project lifecycle, identifying ways to improve processes or increase the technical quality of development workflows, collaborating closely with Product Management, Engineering, and other teams. You will guide the day‑to‑day technical work, focusing on sound architecture, quality, and building the right things, the right way. Additionally, you will be responsible for ensuring the team delivers the product vision and helps influence the product roadmap.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with the talent acquisition team to define a hiring process for your team that ensures the best talent is hired.
- Provide guidance to team members, knowing when to coach and when to mentor.
- Use your technical expertise to contribute towards building a best‑in‑class product.
- Set your team up for success by removing obstacles and supporting their personal and professional growth.
- Be a member of the wider Engineering Management team, meeting regularly with peers from other teams to discuss good practice and challenges.
Basic Qualifications
- 2+ years’ experience leading a data science team.
- Experience of taking an analytical or machine learning product from initial discovery through to delivery.
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, physics, engineering, statistics, economics or a related field, or equivalent experience.
Other Qualifications
- Prior experience building and leading diverse teams in multiple locations.
- Experience of building analytical products that use survey or opinion data.
- You are a data scientist at heart, with a genuine interest in technology and people.
- You prefer the challenge, and reward, of working with a team towards a common goal, rather than trying to reach it alone.
- You value trust, transparency and accountability.
- You are passionate about building and leading an inclusive and diverse team.
- You are able to clearly communicate expectations, and are quick to recognize when someone goes above and beyond to deliver a great result.
- You have a good understanding of agile product development and what it takes to bring a product from idea into the hands of customers.
- You are passionate about finding ways to develop people and improve processes.
- You are looking for an opportunity to grow your career in a fast‑paced, growing company.
