Laboratory Technician in Falmouth

A Laboratory Technician at the Rosalind Franklin Institute will be responsible for supporting laboratory-based scientific investigations by carrying out routine technical tasks and assisting with basic experiments to ensure the smooth running of the labs. The role combines scientific and laboratory support activities, including:

• Supporting routine protein purification activities by following established protocols and standard operating procedures.
• Maintaining mammalian cell cultures, including routine passaging, media preparation, cryopreservation, and management of liquid nitrogen stocks.
• Assisting with general laboratory operations by maintaining a clean, safe, organised, and well-stocked working environment.
• Safely managing laboratory waste, including operating glass washers and autoclaves.
• Preparing routine laboratory reagents, media, buffers, and stock solutions.
• Contributing to the preparation and updating of risk assessments (RAs) and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
• Maintaining accurate records of laboratory activities and contributing data for reports, publications, and scientific presentations.
• Supporting laboratory inductions and providing guidance on aseptic techniques and tissue culture best practice.
• Participating in routine laboratory inspections and contributing to maintaining compliance with health and safety and quality standards.
• Assisting with basic scientific procedures e.g. cell cultures, microscopy and standard biochemical procedures.
• Storing and organising samples and recording results in a clear and concise way.
• Maintaining equipment including washing, sterilisation and disposal.
• Performing quality checks and contributing to the general cleanliness and upkeep of the lab space.
• Recording experimental methods and results and preparing reports to present to researchers or senior members of staff.
• Providing assistance with the day-to-day running of the lab.
• Participating in training and supervision of research students using the laboratory.
• Taking responsibility with others for the daily housekeeping of the laboratory.
• Ensuring that work in the laboratory is conducted safely and in accordance with local health and safety policies.
• Training staff or students in proper procedures and supporting interventions when poor laboratory practice is noted.
