We’re looking for a practical, hands-on Maintenance Operative to join our team at Biffa in Thurrock – someone who takes pride in keeping equipment in top condition and working safely.

Hours: Monday to Friday, 07:00 – 16:30 (45 hours per week)

Pay: £15.21 per hour + monthly allowance

Annual Salary: Approx. £35,591 including allowance

A quick look at the role:

  • Inspect and repair trade waste bins, including fitting lids and wheels, carrying out cleaning, and performing basic welding (training provided).
  • Use power tools and load/unload bins with a forklift (if qualified).
  • Help keep the workshop tidy, follow health and safety procedures, and work well both independently and as part of a small, friendly team.

Your core responsibilities:

  • Inspect, repair, and maintain trade waste bins to company standards, including replacing lids, wheels, and other parts.
  • Carry out regular washing and cleaning of various sized wheeled containers.
  • Use power tools and equipment safely and correctly to complete repairs and maintenance tasks.
  • Perform basic welding tasks where required (training can be provided).
  • Maintain a clean and organised workshop and yard area through good housekeeping practices.
  • Follow all health and safety guidelines, working safely in a physically demanding role.
  • Work well independently and as part of a small, hands-on maintenance team.
  • Be flexible, self-motivated, and able to follow both verbal and written instructions accurately.

Our essential requirements:

  • Previous experience within a workshop environment.
  • Previous experience of working in a production targeted environment.
  • Previous experience of using air tools and power tools in a workshop environment.
