Linguistic Specialist (Remote) in London

Location: Remote within the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, Australia & New Zealand (You must be legally authorised to work in the country where you are based).

Compensation: $15 - $18 per hour based on location, experience, responsibilities, and performance.

Role Overview: We are hiring on behalf of one of our clients, a leading global player in the AI space. This remote, part-time contract role requires a deep understanding of the mechanics of human language. As a Linguistic Specialist, you will apply your knowledge of syntax, semantics, and pragmatics to train the AI model. You will be responsible for creating data and analyzing outputs to ensure the model captures the subtle nuances of natural language, regional dialects, and complex grammatical structures.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design prompts that specifically test the model’s linguistic capabilities, such as handling ambiguity, processing complex syntactic structures, or identifying idiomatic expressions.
• Analyze AI-generated text to identify and categorize specific linguistic errors (e.g., morphological errors, syntactic agreement issues, semantic incoherence).
• Edit responses to ensure they are not only grammatically correct according to prescriptive rules but also pragmatically natural for the given context.
• Annotate text data to label parts of speech, named entities, or sentiment, helping the model understand the structural components of a sentence.
• Develop guidelines for handling dialectal variations and informal registers, helping the AI distinguish between standard and non-standard English usage.

Qualifications:

• Academic background or proven experience in Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, English Language, or a related field.
• Strong understanding of linguistic terminology and concepts (syntax, morphology, semantics, pragmatics).
• Ability to distinguish between descriptive and prescriptive grammar and apply the appropriate lens based on the project instructions.
• Meticulous attention to detail, capable of spotting subtle inconsistencies in language patterns that non-specialists might miss.
• Comfortable working independently in a remote environment, managing time across multiple projects.

Compensation and Benefits:

• Rate: Earn up to $18 USD/hr (Rates vary based on project complexity and expertise).
• Flexibility: 100% remote with no fixed schedule. Contributors typically spend 5–10 hours per week, with the option to work up to 40 hours.
