Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust – Locum Consultant Physician in Respiratory Medicine (Closing date: 07 July 2026). This full‑time replacement post will support the expanded Respiratory Department at an acute hospital serving a population of approximately 400,000.
Key responsibilities
- Maintain the highest clinical standards in the management of all respiratory patients and optimise safe, timely discharge.
- Collaborate with the Respiratory team to manage adult patients referred to the Trust and contribute to the general medical rota if desired.
- Participate actively in departmental and Trust governance, audit, and clinical research.
- Take responsibility for continuing professional development (CPD) and personal professional plans.
- Cover the seven‑day on‑call and respiratory HDU rota, participate in a 6‑month fixed term role with potential for substantive appointment.
- Support the development of new respiratory services and attend formal and informal professional meetings.
About the trust
We provide hospital services to a growing population of around 700,000 people across Bedfordshire and the surrounding areas, operating from two busy hospital sites in Bedford and Luton. Travel between sites may be required.

• 6‑month fixed term, full time.
• Based on terms and conditions of the 2003 consultant contract (England).

• Requires MRCP and full GMC registration, including a Licence to Practice.
• Residency required within 10 miles by road or a 30‑minute driving distance of the hospital.
• Accepts candidates unable to work full time for personal reasons.
Person specification
GMC registration
- Full GMC registration and Licence to Practice.
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (or within six months of receipt of CCT at time of interview) or CESR (must be on Specialist Register at time of applying).
Qualifications
- MB BS, MRCP or equivalent.
- MD, PhD or other higher degree.
Knowledge and clinical skills
- Excellent all‑round experience of DGH work.
- Management and audit relevant to respiratory medicine.
Teaching, research and publications
- Teaching of medicine to trainees and other medical students.
- Some research experience.
Personal skills
- Ability to communicate effectively and cooperate well with all staff and patients.
- Flexible attitude, team player with good time management.
Personal circumstances
- Reside within 10 miles of hospital or a 30‑minute drive from the hospital.
- Fit to undertake the role.
