Locum Consultant in Anaesthetics with an Interest in Obstetrics

The appointee will join the well‑established Department of Anaesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine as a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine as part of a service development plan, for a new 22 bedded Intensive Care Unit under the new Acute Surgical Block (ASB).

Applicants must be included in the GMC Specialist Register for Intensive Care Medicine or be within six months of CCT accreditation. The successful applicant will provide a comprehensive high quality service to the department as a consultant intensivist.

The Clinical Lead for Intensive Care Medicine, at Luton and Dunstable Hospital, is Dr Raza. The successful applicant will join a friendly team in a growing Intensive Care Medicine Department with 13 consultants including single speciality ICM, dual speciality ICM / Anaesthesia or ICM / Emergency Medicine Consultants. The post involves provision of regular day time ICM commitment and out of hours on call ICM consultant commitment.

Luton and Dunstable hospital is located within easy access to central London and the Midlands. London Luton Airport is within fifteen minutes' drive from the hospital.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will join the well‑established Anaesthetics Department as part of a service development plan, where we currently have a new Acute Surgical Block (ASB).

Applicants must be included in the GMC Specialist Register for Anaesthetics or be within six months of CCT accreditation. The successful applicant will provide a comprehensive high quality Anaesthesia service.

The Obstetric lead is Dr Rivers. The successful applicant will join a friendly team providing the anaesthesia service for the maternity department. Our delivery rate is 5500 per year, with anaesthetists involved in the management of around half of the patients, many of whom are high risk. Consultants are job‑planned to cover the labour ward and the elective caesarean section list each weekday. Antenatally, there is a weekly obstetric anaesthetic clinic, a monthly MDT and monthly joint cardiac clinic.

Job responsibilities

The appointments will be subject to full Occupational Health Clearance and Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check for the successful candidates prior to commencement.

The appointee will have Full UK Medical Dental registration at time of application.

Person Specification

Qualifications

• Medical Degree
• MB ChB or equivalent
• FFICM or equivalent
• Membership of an obstetric anaesthesia society (e.g. OAA, SOAP)
• Other relevant qualifications e.g. DICM, EDIC, FRCA, MRCP, FRCP

Registration

• Full GMC registration (GMC Licence to Practice is mandatory before employment commences)
• Evidence of sub‑CCT in ICM (or within 6 months of completion of CCT) specialty training or fellowship out of region
• CESER in ICM (Must be on the specialist Register at time of applying

Clinical Effectiveness

• Knowledge and experience of Safeguarding for Children and Adults
• Current ALS provider status (or European equivalent)
• Participation in relevant national audits
• Implementation of evidence‑based guidelines

Teaching

• Knowledge and ability to teach all grades of trainees and medical students.
• Has attended Teaching the Teachers or similar course.
• GMC registered educational supervisor.
• Ability to work under pressure and cope with setbacks.
• Ability to develop effective working relationships with all levels of staff in the multidisciplinary team.
• Leadership Skills.
• Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national level.

Clinical Governance

• Able to demonstrate a broad understanding of the principles and elements of clinical governance.

Personnel Circumstances

• Residence within 10 miles by road or up to thirty minutes travelling time of the hospital for purposes of on‑call emergencies.
• Fit to undertake the role with satisfactory Occupational Health clearance.
• Satisfactory DBS clearance.

Clinical Experience

• Training and experience equivalent to that required for UK CCT in Intensive Care Medicine.
• Record of regular attendance at national specialty meetings or up‑to‑date CPD activity related to ICM.
• Able to take full and independent responsibility for the care of critically ill patients.
• Use of ultrasound in critical care.
• Accreditation in point of care ultrasound course (e.g. FICE or PocUS).
