We are seeking to recruit a substantive, full‑time, accredited Pain Consultant to join our department at the Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The job is primarily based at the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital with the possibility and opportunity to cover some pain services at the Bedford Hospital site.

Responsibilities

• Provide clinical services in anaesthesia and perioperative care with significant participation in delivering care in the Integrated Pain Service, including inpatient pain, outpatient chronic pain clinics, and intervention injection lists.
• Work in a team‑based approach with flexibility for on‑calls and weekend work, agreeing in service demand requirements.
• Participate in integrated spinal multidisciplinary meetings and the weekly complex pain MDT comprising pain physicians, specialist pain nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, clinical psychologists, pain administrators and other team members.
• Actively participate in departmental educational, audit and clinical governance activities.
• Support routine services and develop subspecialty pain areas such as cancer pain, pelvic pain, and community pain.
• Participate in the anaesthetic on‑call rota at the Luton site.

Qualifications

• FRCA or equivalent.
• Entry on the GMC Specialist Register.
• On the specialty register in Anaesthesia or eligible for entry within 6 months of the interview date.
• Appropriate training and experience in Pain Medicine.
• MD, Ph D or other postgraduate qualification (PGCert, PGDip, MSc).
• ALS, ATLS, EPLS instructor or equivalent.
• FFPMRCA or equivalent.
• Registration
• Full GMC registration with a Licence to Practice.
• Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register: CCT (or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at time of interview) or CESR (must be on Specialist Register at time of application).
• Clinical Effectiveness
• Understanding of clinical governance and ability to demonstrate ongoing CPD.
• Experience of guideline appraisal.
• Participation in relevant local audits.
• Ability to interpret and apply clinical research.
• Participation in relevant national audits.
• Teaching
• Knowledge and ability to teach all grades of trainees and medical students.
• Has attended Teaching the Teachers or similar course.
• Ability to cooperate in a democratic team environment.
• Flexible attitude, team player with good management skills.
• Leadership skills.
• Clinical Governance
• Able to demonstrate a broad understanding of the principles and elements of clinical governance.
• Personnel Circumstances
• Residence within 10 miles by road or up to thirty minutes travelling time of the hospital for on‑call emergencies.
• Fit to undertake the role with satisfactory Occupational Health clearance.
• Satisfactory DBS clearance.
• Clinical Experience
• Excellent all‑round experience of DGH work.
• Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Anaesthetics and advanced airway management skills.
• Able to take full and independent responsibility for clinical work and deliver service without direct supervision.
• Additional Requirements
• Vaccination against COVID‑19 required as per the 2014 Regulations.
• Full UK Medical/Dental registration at time of application.
