We are seeking an enthusiastic HCPC State Registered Biomedical Scientist to join the Clinical Biochemistry section within our busy and friendly Blood Sciences department. This post is offered as a 12-month secondment/fixed-term opportunity. The successful candidate will be primarily based at the Bedford site, with the flexibility to work at the Luton & Dunstable site as required to meet service needs. This role provides an excellent training opportunity to develop specialist knowledge and support ongoing professional development. Upon completion of training, the post holder will be expected to participate in the 24/7 shift rota across both sites, where required. The department holds UKAS accreditation and is approved for IBMS/HCPC training. It is also one of a limited number of organisations accredited by the National School of Healthcare Science for Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, and Transfusion Science training within the clinical sciences. We are committed to the continued development of our services, including the expansion of on-site testing and further integration with other clinical services.

Main duties of the job

  • Maintain consistently high standards of work, motivate colleagues, and act as a professional role model.
  • Participate in all aspects of departmental activity, particularly where specialist expertise is required, and perform tests and assays in a methodical and scientific manner to a high level of accuracy and precision.
  • Support departmental laboratory senior staff in the implementation and delivery of a cohesive and effective service, working closely with the Clinical Lead for the department.
  • Deputise for the departmental laboratory senior as required in their absence.

Job responsibilities

  • To perform as a HCPC Registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist [BMS] assisting in the delivery of the department services.
  • To assist the departmental laboratory senior in the implementation and delivery of a cohesive service, in conjunction with the clinical lead of the department.
  • To implement the quality policy for the department including the agreed quality objectives.
  • To contribute to the implementation of UKAS standards for the department using the Pathology Quality Management System as established, to fulfil the quality circles and audit inherent to the ISO 15189 standards of compliance.
  • To deputise in the absence of the departmental laboratory senior when required to do so.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • HCPC registered
  • Completed an Institute of Biomedical Scientist (IBMS) accredited degree (BSc) in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent and demonstrable experience at BMS level.
  • Completed an Institute of Biomedical Scientist (IBMS) Higher Specialist Diploma (HSD) in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent.
  • Master's degree or related professional health care qualification (FIBMS or Chartered Scientist) or equivalent.

Experience

  • Substantial experience in Biomedical Science at an advanced level.
  • Demonstrable ability to work without supervision.
  • Supervisory role in a laboratory audit and evaluation experience.

Personal Skills

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, at all levels.
  • Excellent Inter-personal skills.
  • Ability to utilise evaluation tools.
  • Ability to analyse complex data and use information to inform judgements.

Knowledge

  • Fully conversant with the Biomedical methodology and ability to employ advanced techniques of laboratory diagnosis.
  • Accurate input of data while working under pressure.
  • Ability to plan own work and the work of others.
  • Knowledge of current UKAS accreditation standards.
