Band 4 Biomedical Associates are sought for a 12‑month fixed‑term contract to join our Cellular Pathology team. Your base will be the Cellular Pathology Laboratory at Bedford Hospital, with occasional shifts at Luton & Dunstable Hospital. The role requires a solid general histology background with hands‑on experience in immunohistochemistry and histology automation.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in day‑to‑day operations and technical aspects of the service.
  • Support Specialist and Senior BMS in delivering a high‑quality, efficient service through the Quality Management System.
  • Implement changes directed by laboratory seniors or manager and ensure compliance with UKAS standards, national and European legislation, and discipline‑specific regulatory bodies.
  • Assist in training and development of scientific and support staff.
  • Perform duties as a HCPC‑registered Biomedical Scientist assisting with department services.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of biomedical procedures acquired through training to A level or NVQ3 level.
  • Minimum 2 years of knowledge and experience in a cellular pathology laboratory within a UK laboratory.
  • IC and HCPC registration or eligibility.

Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • IT knowledge and skills.
  • Flexible approach to working relationships.
  • Ability to assist a pathologist and BMS dissection bench.
  • Experience of embedding and sectioning paraffin blocks, microtomy, pathologist assist, digital pathology.

  • All new staff will be subject to a probationary period of six months in post.
  • Travel between hospital sites may be required.
