Join our Highways team as a Level 6 Civil Engineering Apprentice. Help deliver roads, cycleways and footpaths, working on S278 and S38 agreements to support local infrastructure.
Hours: Mondays to Fridays, 8:00am–5:30pm; 35 hours a week.
Duration: 5 years (60 months).
What you’ll do at work:
- You will be the bridge between private developers and the council, ensuring new or modified roads are safe, high‑quality and fit for public use.
- You will see projects move from paper drawings to finished roads within the apprenticeship.
Key responsibilities:
- Technical Design Audit: review engineering drawings for new estate roads (S38) and improvements to the existing highway (S278) to meet council standards, legislation and national Codes of Practice.
- Legal Agreements: manage the end‑to‑end process of highways adoption agreements under the Highways Act 1980.
- Site Inspections: shadow senior engineers on‑site to confirm construction matches approved plans before council ownership.
- Developer Liaison: act as a point of contact for housebuilders and consultants to move projects from planning to delivery.
- Bond & Fee Management: calculate financial bonds and inspection fees to protect council interests.
- Earn Whilst you Learn: spend one day a week at university working toward a BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering and professional Integrated Engineer status.

Training: Apprenticeships include specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills aligned with civil engineering standards.

Other requirements: You must have the ability to drive throughout the county; a current and valid driving licence is required.
