Band 5 Acute Speech & Language Therapist
Overview
Provide high-quality speech and language therapy services as an integral member of the multi-disciplinary team at Worcester Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. Responsible for patient care, development of treatment plans with client-centred goals, professional conduct, and contribution to clinical governance and service improvement.
Responsibilities
- Patient/client care: develop and carry out robust treatment and management plans, individually or in groups; evaluate outcomes; follow discharge criteria with the MDT; disseminate information to ensure smooth transfer on discharge.
- Specialist training and advice: provide specialist advice, teaching and training to MDT members regarding SLT management of communication and swallowing disorders; share information in line with data protection guidelines.
- Professional conduct: work in accordance with RCSLT and HPC rules within local pathways, policies and standards; maintain competence and fitness to practice as a Specialist SLT with stroke and other adult patients; maintain a professional evidence-based portfolio meeting HPC requirements.
- Supervision and governance: supervise SLT students on practice placement; contribute to divisional and team clinical governance and quality agendas, including reporting clinical risks.
Organisational
- Lead information management within your area to maintain high-quality, up-to-date records and activity data; collate, interpret and analyse data; report findings for service development; provide specialist reports as required.
- Participate in planning, evaluation and audit of practice, clinical pathways and protocols; manage resources and equipment to meet service needs; report faults; be available for weekend/out-of-hours work within competencies; accept delegated tasks in the SLT service management.
- Financial and physical resources: monitor stock levels; request equipment as needed; ensure infection control and safety standards for equipment including loaned items.
- Human resources: supervise assistants and volunteers; participate in student placements and preceptorship requirements; explain the role of SLTs to visitors, students and volunteers.
- Research and development: contribute to clinical governance/audit projects and departmental research under supervision, and participate in departmental research activities.
- Freedom to act: be accountable for own professional action, work within defined protocols/policies and professional code of conduct; pursue appraisal within an Individual Performance Framework.

- Communication and relationship skills: contribute to multidisciplinary and single-discipline teams; communicate complex information to clients, carers, families and the MDT; develop collaborative decision-making and empathetic engagement; manage barriers to understanding and motivate clients/carers; develop negotiation skills and handle complaints sensitively; build productive relationships under stress; employ excellent communication.
Training and Experience
- Identify personal/professional development through a Personal Development Plan/Professional Portfolio within an appraisal framework; participate in Individual Performance Review; maintain HCPC and RCSLT registration; adhere to professional guidelines; contribute to training for others.
- Keep up to date with new techniques and developments in the field; attend relevant courses and meetings; develop knowledge of Clinical Governance principles and their application to professional practice.
