JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Director of Academic Programming and Student Transitions, this position provides individualized support to a caseload of undergraduate students and develops initiatives focused on sophomore student success. This academic advisor position supports undergraduate students through a developmental advising approach, educates students in a flexible and creative learning environment, and actively collaborates with students, faculty, and staff to promote academic success.
Job Responsibilities
Academic Advising:
- Serves as an academic advising resource for a caseload of students across majors and class years by conducting individual advising appointments throughout the academic year to assist students with short- and long-term academic planning, major selection, and course selection; assisting students in navigating campus systems and accessing appropriate resources to support their academic and personal success.
Sophomore Support Initiatives:
- Implements initiatives focused on supporting students through their sophomore year by identifying opportunities to collaborate with students, staff, and faculty to facilitate the holistic educational development of sophomore students, including their physical, mental, and emotional well-being; developing and teaching course curriculum for the Sophomore Success class during the Fall and Spring semesters; assessing academic success outcomes for sophomore students.
Course Registration Support:
- Provides course registration support to students by conducting individual appointments to help students outline an appropriate course schedule; offering drop-in availability during add/drop and registration periods to assist students in planning and finalizing their path of study each term; hosting informational sessions and presentations for specific student groups regarding course selection and registration advice.
Other Responsibilities:
- Submits CARE reports for students whose concerns extend beyond academic advising or who are academically at risk and unresponsive to outreach.
- Liaises with the CARE Team Coordinator to develop plans for addressing student concerns, which may include communication with faculty or family members as needed and appropriate.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the manager or supervisor.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, psychology, higher education, or a related field.
- 1–2 years of experience in advising or a related field, supporting students in an educational capacity.
Salary and Benefits
Salary: $49,500 – $55,000 per year (depending on experience)
Benefits: WPI offers a comprehensive package including 4 weeks of paid time off, an additional week at the end of December, 13 paid holidays, health, dental, and vision insurance, a 9.5% retirement match after one year, disability and life insurance, tuition assistance (including full WPI tuition for dependents after 3 years), and free access to the fitness center.
