We're seeking a new Chair to provide strategic leadership to our board, employees and volunteers as we expand the activities and provision of our beautiful community centre on Tooting Common.
What difference will you make?
You’ll be the leader of the board, guiding and supporting your fellow trustees to ensure that our charity achieves its aims and meets our statutory responsibility. You’ll provide challenge and take decisions where necessary but you’ll also be able to motivate and empower your colleagues and forge them into an effective team.
What are we looking for?
It’s important to us that you’re local to our centre, The Woodfield Pavilion on Tooting Common. We’re a charity that is all about local communities and engagement with our local environment, so we’d like you to be close enough to pop in on a regular basis. You must also be in a position to devote four hours a week to the charity and to sustain the role over the next three years.
You’ll have leadership experience and you’ll have worked in situations where you’re responsible for leading a team to achieve specific objectives. You’ll help the team to create a clear vision for the future and you’ll be able to align your colleagues behind it and encourage and support them to achieve it.
You’ll be able to create an inclusive and collaborative environment where everyone feels encouraged to contribute. You’ll be comfortable with challenge and debate but you’ll also be able to act decisively when necessary. While you may have other commitments, you’ll be able to respond to the demands of the role and reply in a timely fashion to queries and communications.

What will you be doing?
As Chair you’ll lead a board of local people who are passionate about community, well‑being and the environment. We’ve been through a lot of change recently and now have a new centre manager with great ideas for expanding our offering. We’re looking to establish a stable trustee board with the skills to give him the support he needs.
We’re a tiny charity running a vibrant and busy community centre so the role is very hands‑on and will involve connection with every part of our enterprise. Our aims over the next year are to create a sustainable long‑term funding base, ensure strong governance and compliance, and maximise the use and impact of our building.
For this reason, we’re looking for trustees who can commit to the role for the next three years, who are local to Tooting Common, and who are able to devote four hours a week to the charity. In return, you’ll be part of a small, friendly and informal board working closely with our centre manager to maximise the difference our charity can make to our local communities. You’ll also build a deep connection with a unique building in a stunning natural environment and with the many and diverse groups whom it serves.
