Wood is recruiting for an experienced certified Senior Functional Safety Engineer who has a good understanding of IEC 61511 SIS Lifecycle model and has working knowledge and experience of the key SIS Lifecycle activities. The role will support a high-profile client on a UK based project. The Functional Safety Engineer (FSE) will join our Upstream team within our Operations business.
There is a requirement for hybrid working with 3 days per week being based out of either Aberdeen, Glasgow, Stockton or Staines offices with visit to the UK based client site when required. This position will be for a period of 12 months project specific and can be engaged on a limited contractor basis outside IR35. Please note applicants must be able to pass HMG Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) check.
The Senior Functional Safety Engineer will be involved in the full functional safety lifecycle, ensuring rigorous compliance with client requirements, Wood Functional Safety standards, and all relevant national and international codes, regulations and best practices. Serving as the primary point of contact for functional safety across project definition, development, and execution, this role provides strategic oversight and technical leadership to drive best‑in‑class functional safety performance. Working within a team of FSEs you will prepare or review the full suite of functional safety documentation, including the Functional Safety Plan, Functional Safety Management Procedures, Safety Requirements Specifications, SIS Impact Analysis, SIL Calculations, as well as SIL Verification and Validation Procedures.

Responsibilities
- Manage functional safety assessments, audits, risk assessments and independent verification of lifecycle deliverables
- Utilise ExSILentia software for managing functional safety lifecycle activities
- Track and control project manhours for functional safety activities
- Conduct SIS verification and validation reviews according to project standards
- Oversee integration of safety systems and ensure project compliance with IEC 61511
- Ensure the operator is supplied with the required documentation to allow the systems to be operated and maintained properly
- Participate as functional safety expert in HAZOP / CHAZOP activities
- Participate in Deterministic SIL Workshops as C&I Engineer
- Knowledge of modelling of complex SIS Loops using Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) techniques
- Develop, review and approve SIS Proof Test Procedures for end-to-end testing of SIF Loops
- Close communication with other disciplines in the preparation and development of the functional safety deliverables and ensure that other disciplines' input is incorporated

- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent applicable demonstratable experience
- TUV FS Engineer certificate or equivalent
- Significant experience in EPC/MAC/plant operations, specifically in process or automation & control systems within the oil & gas, hydrocarbon, refinery, offshore, or infrastructure sectors
- Ability to prioritise tasks effectively to manage multiple projects running concurrently
- Experience in brownfield upgrades/replacement of automation and control systems projects
- Stay updated on the latest industry developments
- Understanding of commercial aspects as related to projects and operations
- Excellent communication abilities, with enthusiasm and diplomacy in interactions
- Inquisitive, well organised, and have a keen eye for detail
- Ability to work effectively in an integrated team environment, supporting colleagues and fostering trust and respect within the team
- Hands on experience with ExSILentia and/or aeShield software packages
Desirable
- Chartered Engineer and member of appropriate engineering institution
- Knowledge of ISO 21789 and performance of gas turbine safety assessment review
- Knowledge of EEMUA 201 and coordination of Alarm management study
- Compressor Station / Metering experience is advantageous
- Knowledge of IEC 62443 and cybersecurity as applicable to functional safety
