Wood is currently recruiting for a Cost Consultant in our Major Projects team. The Cost Consultant is accountable for the development and maintenance of the project budget as well as tracking project costs and maintaining the project within the approved budget with attention to detail being of the utmost importance. The role includes supporting the programme/project manager and the programme/project controls manager to develop the project scope, requirements, and work breakdown structure. The role is also responsible for establishing appropriate techniques to monitor and control delivery to time, cost, and quality parameters.

The preparation and reporting of project cost budgets, and the tracking, management and reporting of project expenditure to enable robust control of projects throughout their lifecycle. Assists in the preparation and reporting of project cost budgets, in accordance with contractual requirements and Wood policies, procedures and standards. This will typically involve the review, analysis and reporting of actual and forecasted project costs against the project approved budget. This role is responsible for supporting the delivery of programmes or projects involving multidisciplinary teams. Collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders is required and therefore strong communication and interpersonal skills are required. Furthermore, the Cost Manager is responsible for high quality delivery and promoting health and safety excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supporting the logical structuring of the scope and requirements of projects to facilitate effective scheduling and monitoring.
  • Managing the processes, techniques, and systems to plan, monitor and control delivery of the programme or project schedule.
  • Assisting in the development and maintenance of Project Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and Cost Breakdown Structure (CBS) for specific scopes.
  • Assisting in the development of project budgets in accordance with the Basis of Estimate including statements of work scope, assumptions, man-hour estimates, narratives and review & comment of client documents.
  • Assisting in the development and maintenance of project cost budgets using appropriate software applications.
  • Supporting the project work approval process in terms of accurate cost code allocation and initial budget set-up and approvals.
  • Maintaining the performance measurement baseline and protocols for measurement of progress for time and cost commitments and expenditures through all phases of project lifecycle.
  • Producing performance progress reports to the programme/project and providing input to project cost performance reports in accordance with project reporting requirements.
  • Assisting in the development of project change orders/variations in accordance with engineering and construction change notifications.
  • Capturing information into programme/project controls systems including the management of documents and records.
  • Monitoring overall project cost performance and contingency drawdown.
  • Liaising with procurement, finance and time-capture functions, and third parties as required, to support accurate and timely capture of procurement, materials, subcontract and labour manhour costs, allocating costs in accordance with approved project WBS.
  • Undertaking schedule analysis such as Earned Value Analysis and critical path analysis.
  • Involved in administration and maintenance of contract documents.
  • Liaising with engineering, procurement and construction functions, and others as required, to maintain awareness of project activities and their impact on the project budget, schedule and cost forecast.
  • Preparing budgets, forecasts, reviewing budget proposals, and preparing necessary supporting documentation and justification.
  • Maintaining processes to identify and track risks including the impacts on schedule and where appropriate applying risk modelling to the schedule.
  • Determining interfaces and dependencies within the schedule and external to the project.
  • Attending cost & estimate risk analysis sessions as required.
  • Supporting in Project Controls Compliance and Continuous Improvement Review.
  • Attending project meetings as required.
  • Supporting in the project cost close-out process.

Qualifications

Skills / Experience

  • Experience of preparing and maintaining definitions of the requirements of projects and/or programmes.
  • Experience in the development of integrated project baselines and tracking/controlling performance to achieve delivery of projects to time and within budget.
  • Consolidating and documenting the fundamental components of projects and/or programmes and/or portfolios (scope, schedule, resource requirements, budgets, risks, issues and quality).
  • Identifying and monitoring project and/or programme and/or portfolio risks (threats and opportunities), planning and implementing responses to them and responding to other issues that might affect the project and/or programme and/or portfolio.
  • Applying protocols to change the scope of projects and/or programmes and/or portfolios, and updating configuration documents as required.
  • Experience in the use of programme/project controls software for scheduling.
  • Knowledge of approaches for the preparation and maintenance of schedules of project and/or programme activities and events, taking account of dependencies and resource requirements.
  • Proven experience of collaborating with people.
  • Confident communicator.
  • Experience of preparing and maintaining an overall schedule for resource use, which avoids bottlenecks and conflicting demands, and sequencing outcomes, to enable the efficient realisation of benefits.
